iPod Sport Kit Firewire connection not suppoprted error

Each time I run on the treadmill the Nike+ iPod workout starts off just fine, but about 5 minutes into my workout the music and verbal mesages stop and the error message "Firewire connection not supported" appears in the Nano window.
I end up finishing my workout with music but not through the Nike+ which is why I bought the sport kit in the first place. HELP...

I am posting the following here and under the "Activity Stopped" thread because I got both of these messages on the same day and they may be related:
I got the "Activity Stopped" audio message multiple times on a run today for the first time. I have logged over 600 miles with my Nano and Nike sport kit with no problem before. When I got home, I also got this display message for the first time: "Firewire connections are not supported..." and I use a USB connector!
I sweat profusely, so I hope the nano isn't water damaged!

I am having the same exact problem. Not only is the "Activity Stopped" message happening frequently, I am getting the same "Firewire connections are not supported" message. I actually got a new iPod Nano from Apple last month, as my old one stopped working after only four months. I use it when running, and I do sweat alot as well, so I'm very concerned about that. Furthermore, it seems my old Nike + transmitter doesn't fit snugly into the new iPod Nano, and just the slightest nudge to it causes the workout to finish prematurely and the "Workout Complete" dialog to start.

I've had this same issue and I am going through my third IPod Nano. I think the problem is with sweat getting into the Ipod. It's getting into the Ipod through the interface port and the Headphone jack. I think Apple needs to provide a rubber plug that you can put into the port hole that would help prevent the sweat from getting into the Ipod. When I get the next Ipod I am going to put some tape over the port. Not sure If there is anything that can be done about the headphone jack. The only other thing I can think of is a waterproof case but I haven't seen one that is good for running.

I have the exact same problem. I sweat profusely and started having problems when I switched to putting the Nano in a Rhino Skin device that actually held the device upside down and allowed sweat to enter into the sockets where the Nike+ device and earphones connected. I then started to get the "Firewire" error and shortly after that my workouts started to end prematurely. It took several days and sometime with a hair dryer on the cool setting to remove all the moisture from the Nano but the damage appears to have been done. The "Firewire" error does not appear as often as before but I am never able to complete a workout. The slightest disturbance of the connection stops the workout. I am able to go further if I hold the Nano in my hand instead of using the Nike Armband (while avoiding excess movement) but nevertheless it still occurs. I have tried replacing the Nike+ sensor but to no avail. I have read several discussions on the issue but both Apple and Nike appear to be silent on the issue. One would think that a device made to be used during a workout would be more robust then it is. I have not been able to determine the exact cause of the problem. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

I went through exactly same issues described in this thread. I am avid runner and knew sweat was the culprit. I have been using H2O audio outdoor series case to protect nano and it seems to be working well. I clip it on my waist while running. It does have rubber plugs on the bottom two holes. I have logged over a thousand miles without incident since using this system.

I haven't had the Firewire error, but when I run long I get the "Activity Stopped, press the center button to resume your workout" error message in my earbuds. It registers the time from then on, but registers the speed at 0 mph. The result of hitting the center button, "to resume your workout" multiple times before giving up on unit, is adding time but no mileage. On Sept. 1, I finished a 16 mile run / 2:22:48 with 8 miles registering at a 12:45 min/mile pace. (Actual should have been in the 8.9 min/mile range).
I am using a refurb iPod Nano 2 GB with the Nike Armband, Nike shirt, Nike Zoom+ shoes, so they can't blame me for going off of the reservation.
This Saturday, the unit gave the "Activity Stopped" message and then immediately thereafter gave a "Workout Ended" message at 5.75 miles, which preserved my average pace marks, but negated the next 10+ miles on my run. Tried to restart / begin a new workout on the run, but no luck. Music would work, but Nike + was unreviable. Makes it hard to compete and reach goals - which is the whole idea of Nike + iPod.
The issue has never surfaced while running at the house or gym on the treadmill, but I usually keep a towel handy, lending to the too much sweat theory. Heading to the Apple store to look for the H2O Audio solution tonight.

Wow, very intriguing! I've been using my Nike+ setup for about 6 months now, the last two of which I've been using the new Nike armband.
I haven't had these issues yet and since reading these posts I'm going to try to do something to prevent these things from happening to me. Sounds like a more water/sweat proof case is the answer!
By the way, I've heard the battery life on the sensor is about 2 years. Anyone had any experience with one dying on them any sooner?
