Display of dark images/video
Posted: Sep 13, 2007 9:13 PM

Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.

I do not have the iPodT yet but I would be amazed if there is not some sort of brightness adjustment. Does this only occur with video and say not with photos? If so I would think you have a bad unit.

The darks are equally bad on video and photos. Played with the brightness at all levels and have the same result.

My iPod Touch seems to display all black scenes and movies and pictures with an almost negative black effect, so it looks like I am staring at the LCD from a bad angle, when in fact I am staring at it dead on. Is this what you are experiencing, because I have it too, and might have to go in and exchange it if this is not common.

I'll try to explain how it looks a little bit more clearly. Dark images (say suit or black hair)almost look like negatives. The colors don't blend and the depth of the darks is very shallow - meaning minimal detail.

Yes Sergey! That is exactly the way it looks. You described it far better than I did. Sorry to see yours is doing the same thing. Let's see if other people experience it. Hope we got bad units, because it's kind of unwatchable, and I bought it more for videos than music.

I have been scouring message boards, and I found one other person who has this. If this really is some issue with the screen, then we should definately exchange it. I just got mine from the 5th avenue store in Manhattan and I will go back there to exchange it if this really is an issue. If it isn't and all the iPhones and touches are like this, then that is really wierd.

Mine looks terrible. Any dark areas of video turn into a negative image. It's pretty unwatchable. Anybody not seeing this? I wonder if it an issue with the hardware, firmware or video encode settings...

I am actually the guy who posted this on ipod lounge.

So it seems more than a few people have this issue.

Is it worth it to try going to the Apple Store tonight or tomorrow and getting an exchange?

Hey guys. I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my touch. I'm starting to think Apple must've cheaped out on the displays for the touch over the iphone.. that's disappointing..

I have not noticed this. I am pretty particular about my displays and especially black levels and I am not noticing this effect. What lighting conditions are you watching in? I am under flourescent lights but will try outside later and in the dark as well.

I'm under fluorescent lights in the office. I did notice the issue last night but was probably still in an RDF from the elation of getting the touch. Looking at it again today, I am noticing that the blacks are shimmering and glowing. It's not even just in videos. It's in the main menu, coverflow, everywhere..

I'm pretty particular about my displays as well, but this is glaringly obvious. It's like I can't find a good viewing angle on the touch at all. I may have to end up exchanging this after all.

On a side note, I did even notice a few stuck/dead pixels but since the pixel density is so high, you can barely see them.

I bought my ipod in SoHo NYC. Did anyone buy it on the 5th ave store? I'm wondering if they got a better batch.

I bought mine on 5th Avenue NYC and I have the horrible black shimmering negatives.

So, I have an appointment with a genius tomorrow at 12:15 at the 5th Avenue store. Lets see if an exchanged unit helps.

Please do post back with the result. I would go to the soho store today but I don't have my receipt with me in the office. Do you think I could do an exchange without it?
