Ok, I have a 10gb hard drive with 9.1 & 10.2.8 and i'm not up to the challenge of upgrading it to a larger drive. I want to install mac os x panther. with none of my stuff on it. I know you need to install the latest firmware or your imac will be "dead" or something like that i read. But i don't have to os 9 cds (or the restore cds) and i don't want to purchase the os 9 cds. So what can i do?

Start up the computer into the existing Mac OS 9 system, and then run this firmware updater if necessary; changing the hard disk won't erase the firmware update. You will probably find that the updater has already been installed, as it is required for Mac OS X 10.2 or newer on that computer.

Assuming that you have a retail/universal Panther installer CD from which your iMac will boot (and not another Mac's Restore disk), you will insert the CD and then choose to restart the computer to install OS X. After the computer boots from the Panther CD, select "Utilities" from the drop-down menu at the top. Using Disk Utility, erase and reformat the hard drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume (Journaled is recommended). After that's completed, you can install Panther, but you should have more than 128 MBs of memory for optimal performance. Is the existing 128 MBs of installed memory a single 128 MB DIMM or a pair of 64 MB DIMMs? If the former, I'd recommend adding another 128 or 256 MB DIMM. If you have a pair of 64 MB DIMMs, you should remove one and replace it with a 256 MB DIMM.

Hi,
You only need OS 9 CDs if you want OS 9!
If you have system restore discs for 10.2 that include some iLife apps (iPhoto, iMovie etc.) you don't have individual discs for, you may still want to install this first and then upgrade to keep them. If this ends up installing OS 9, then just delete it by trashing the folders with OS9 after them. This may mean you only have to delete OS9 from your existing install.
Just another idea. This works if the CD/DVD drive is inoperative. You can install 10.3 by using another mac installing it onto yours in 'Target Disc' mode and having your mac connected by firewire. Just make sure it has a power pc processor (G3, G4 or G5) not an Intel.
Remember, you must own install discs of the operating system to have the license to use it.

So, if i erase the hard drive the firmware WILL STAY updated. What applications does a default install of panther include. I only use iPhoto. I DO NOT have any use for mac os 9. will iLife 06' work on panther? Also will iWork 06' Work also? I have 2 64mb ram sticks. I'll upgrade with the 256mb stick then later and another and remove the 64mb and give me a total of 512mb. I'll purchase a REATIL version of Panther from ebay. Black weith the X not the grey machine specific discs. I don't want to purchase anything i don't need.

Thanks that was helpful. But i still need to know if i erase the hard drive that the firmware WILL stay updted. because i just got this imac a week or two ago and i don't want to lose it. I've heard like on thecreativeone's video on upgrade an imac, on the comments that the firmware is "on" the hard drive and if you reformat it it will be lost. Is that true? if i get iWork 05' could i use it because, quote "Minimum system requirements include Mac OS X version 10.3.6, a Macintosh® computer with a 500 MHz or faster PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor (G4 for PowerBook), 128 MB of RAM (512MB recommended), 8MB of video RAM (32MB recommended), QuickTime 6.5 or later and iLife ’04 or later recommended." unquote. Or should i just purchase AppleWorks 6 for os X? (I will be using it for school use.) I did some research and iLife 04' and 05' ARE supported on a g3. But since panther comes with iPhoto ,iMovie , & iTunes thats all i need. So thanks for your knowledge & help

The firmware is on a chip on the logic board. You an erase the harddrive.

The file on the disk will be gone but the firmware will be on the chip.

Classic is NOT part of OS X. Therefore you will need to install OS 9 separately. It is probably easier to install OS 9 first. Then do the OS 9 upgrades to get to OS 9.2.2. Then install OS X.
