Airport KPs in Leopard!
Posted: Oct 25, 2007 8:54 AM

Just got my copy of Leopard and, unfortunately, I keep getting the same Kernel Panic.

If i recall correctly, in all of the instances I had my USB WD External connected and all or most of the following apps running:

-Azureus
-Parallels
-Firefox
-NetNewsWire
-Adium
-iChat

My bandwidth would drop to zero, as indicated by Azureus speeds and Firefox hanging on page loading. This had happened to me occasionally on 10.4.10 and to solve it I would click the Airport on the Status Bar, and reselect my ALREADY CONNECTED network. I immediately attempted to click the active/connected Airport icon on the Status bar in 9A581 in order to try to reselect my network, as I did in 10.4.10; however, this repeatedly caused a Kernel Panic. Again, the Kernel Panics have occured only in this exact fassion; immediately with the click of the Airport icon. (On 2nd thought, I once tried to open the Network tab in System Pref and the same KP occured)

Here is a crash report of the KP:

I presume some of you are hesitating to respond for doubting the authenticity of my Leopard installation. It was ordered from a University book store and paid for ( $69 :) )

On another note, it seems that, along with a couple of members on another forum, I have been able to conclude that the causal application is Azureus. Good thing Transmission has made some significant improvements since the last time I gave it a shot!

Tomorrow morning the "official" Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) forums will be turned on at some point (and the "pre-release" forum will be locked). If you still need to, I might suggest you come back in the morning tomorrow and re-post your topic in the new forums where there's bound to be more traffic.

I too have had this same problem.

I was also running Azureus.

It is definately the problem.

However, doesn't Mac OS X have protected memory to protect from this kind of thing?

I guess it is really an Airport driver problem that is affected negatively by Azureus using a lot of bandwidth.

I've just experienced the same crash while reading a web page with Azureus running.

I upgraded to the latest experimental version of Azureus by following the instructions at http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Change_the_Azureus_2_jar_file and my kernel hasn't panicked since.

I don't even have azureus installed on my macbook, and I get the same kernel panic. It has only happened three times, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I hacked an Airport Disk to be a Time Machine disk. I'm going to leave Time Machine off for a while, and see if I get anything similar.

I get that kernel crash also. The only app that is alway open when it happens is azureus. Right now, it's the only application that was open a couple of minutes ago when it crashed. i'm going to try the version proposed in this thread.

I also have the EXACT same kernel panic, and I also noticed the same behavior:
  • Firefox not responding / not able to load pages
  • Azureus running, but 0 bandwidth used
When I tried to reselect the wireless network, the os/x crashed.

I to will try the Azureus fix/workaround, but clearly the OS should not crash because of some particular app-usage. I suspect it is a bug in the airport driver itself that only rears its head upon "real" load (that would explain the crash during a timemachine back-up as in the posting mentioned above...)

I also installed the latest Azureus Beta and first thought it helped, but now the kernel panics are back again.

Same problem since Friday. this evening I had about 4 of them!

Azureus does seem to be the culprit. I'm now using Transmission, will report if further problems encountered.

Let me repeat that after installing all of the automatic updates on azureus 2.5, I was able to retain the 2.5 interface with a 3.x core and the Kernel Panics completely stopped!

Give it a shot... I believe it was caused by Azureus and not OS X and that the Azureus team did a great job at promptly resolving the issue...
