Leopard crond security problem
Posted: Oct 28, 2007 1:46 AM

Hello everyone!

I'm having here a small issue with my Leopard install, I have a cron process that checks out a directory and does specific actions on it, nothing too glamourous.

When I fire up this crontab this line pops up in the system.log

Oct 28 09:43:00 treptow com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10b770.cron38727): Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access

I'm kinda certain that this is due to the security layer in the kernel, but still I'm a bit curious about what crond is trying to do that ****** the kernel off.

Thanks for your help!

I am having the same issue. I did an upgrade on a system that has been continuosly upgraded since 10.1.

Additionally I have cron files in /var/cron/tabs that are not being used when running crontab -e.

I see the same thing. I have a task (/usr/bin/command) that works just fine with my user permissions, but generates that "Mach task" error in the system.log every time it's fired from cron. This very same task worked flawless (via cron) in Tiger, so I'm assuming it has something to do with permissions or security.

Cron actually does successfully launch the task, and it does its work correctly, but generates the error. After running all night, I got into the situation where Terminal wouldn't launch at all.

I am having the same issue. Im glad I'm not the only one now maybe we will figure it out. I Erased and installed after going through Hours of **** trying to upgrade... I see this in Console. How do we cease it. I'm getting it every minute so it must be slowing me down or lousing up responsiveness.

Yep, I'm getting it too. I don't know whether it's causing that much extra load, but it would still be nice to get to the root cause of it.

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to reinstall MySql and when I launch it I get this message. It also appears to hang my terminal session. I haven't confirmed this yet but the last time it happened I had to restart my Mac in order to use a Terminal session.

Has anyone find the cause of this problem? A friend of mine has exactly this problem and he doesn't have any cron jobs running. It seems many have the same problem but still no solution.

I finally clean installed as I was NOT getting errors on a clan install on an external. That did the trick for me.

Post to the Unix forum under OS X Technologies. That's where the Unix crowd hangs its hat.

I just stumbled upon this in the console today, tripping off every 5 minutes due to a cron job that runs a batch of jobs every 5 minutes. The job seems to be working fine though.

Judging from all the complaints in this thread and no response from anyone (at Apple or otherwise) for the actual cause of the issue, I assume this is currently in the "known issue, developer is ignoring it" category?

This is a clean installation of OS X Server 10.5 and no, I am not about to try that again in the dim hopes it fixes this issue. The user folder was imported, but the crontabs of course did not come with the home folder and had to be put back in so that's not it either.

In your case, posting to the OS X Server forum might get you an answer.
