I installed Leopard over the weekend and now the external drive I have been using is not showing on the desk top. The device is shown in the system profiler. How do I fix this problem?

See if the vendor has firmware update for the USB/FW chipset.
You need to find out and include if it is USB or USB/FW and System Profile should provide some more information, like if it uses an Oxford 911+ chipset or 'bridge.'

I installed the most recent driver from Maxtor, still nothing. This is USB/FW. I looked in System Profiler under Firewire and it shows the Maxtor Onetouch III. There isn't a reference to chipset or bridge listed. Any other suggestions?

hey i'm new to this forum having just got a mac for the first time! Anyway I've got a Mac Pro with Tiger and i have the same problem as this. No devices are recognised on the desktop - and as that is the only way i know how to safely disconnect(via drag to trash) i'm not sure what the problem is. The devices in question are a card reader and an external hard disk - both of which appear in system profiler.
Any ideas guys?
