Spotlight not returning results from User Library
Posted: Oct 28, 2007 12:38 PM

Spotlight wont return any results from my home library. I can search for a file I know is there and nothing shows up. I do not have anything in the privacy settings in the pref pane. Any help would be appreciated.

Solved

It turns out that Spotlight has indexed your user library. You just don't see the results in the default search criteria.

Hopefully, this is a temporary workaround until they fix this -

When you have a finder search window open, in the search criteria bar next to the 'Save' button, hit the '+' button.
In the secondary criteria bar, where I believe the pop-up menu defaults to "Kind", select "System files", and then "include". If System files is not an option in the pop-up menu, select "Other..." and then add that as a search attribute by checking the "In Menu" checkbox next to the "System files" attribute.

By including System files, it will also return your results from your user library. At least this has worked every time for me.

Hopefully Apple will fix this in the next update.

Hope that helps!

Thanks. That did the trick to find what I needed. It sure isn't a very efficient method though.

So is this the default behavior in Leopard? If so, I am surprised I haven't heard more people complain about that. Or is it a bug?

Apple probably figures most people get enough returns without the system files.

That may be fine, but the fact remains that what's in your user library are not system files - but your user files. This is clearly a bug - Apple got it right with Tiger and included them in Spotlight's default results.

This is really, really bad. It means that, for instance, chat logs from Adium are not returned as results in the Spotlight menu, while mdfind still finds them.

The "System files" rationale is not convincing: for instance, Apple lets you search for text inside email messages which ARE stored inside ~/Library. Why are those considered ok by Spotlight, but not data from third-party applications?

As a developer I have filed a but report with Apple. I consider this a very serious system bug. Journler stores all of its files in ~/Library/Application Support and relies on spotlight metadata when 3rd party documents are imported into the journal. Because spotlight in Leopard no longer searches there, not only do Journler documents not appear in Leopard, but metadata for those 3rd party files doesn't show up either.

I can understand why Application Support might not be spotlighted, but that ~/Library doesn't work either is just painful. This is the natural location for a single database application that stores its documents as individual files, much like Mail, which does appear to be spotlighted even though it stores its data in ~/Library.

Seriously annoying.

A huge THANK YOU! This was one of my biggest gripes with Leopard. I didn't know where to look to fix it, so I'm glad someone else figured this out. So annoying that they change such basic items.

You may or may not consider this easier:

1. Open a spotlight window but leave the search field empty
2. Add the system files as explained by LB Jeffries
3. Save search and check add to sidebar

Now when you need to search for system files:

1. Start finder in the saved search (whatever you named it, sidebar under Search For)
2. Type desired filename in finder's search field
3. Refine search by changing from This Mac to saved search

I see this as a big drawback to Leopard. Spotlight was one of Tiger's greatest attractions to me.
