Check the Advanced tab in Preferences and make sure that the correct format is chosen (APOP or Password). This solved my original problem, but it came back after upgrading to 10.5.1

Same here. I'm getting REALLY frustrated having to type passwords. Is that button "Remember this password in my keychain" a dummy???
And can someone explain why I didn't have these prompts for PW almost a full month after upgrading to Leopard (and some time after upgrading to 10.5.1) and now suddenly - WITHOUT any changes - they bomb me every 30 minutes!!!

Yes! This works for me too! I had Mail running splendidly for months. This morning it started asking for my passwords again, and didn't save them. Restoring Mail.app from the installation DVD package (as described above) fixed the problem.

It's almost like it has something to do with Apple signing the applications? Anyway, I 'locked' the Mail application for now (maybe that'll prevent this from happening again), and I keep a 'fresh' copy around on the drive, just in case.

Cape did you use Pacifist? If so, did you choose to install every from scratch, or just overwrite the files?

(Stoopid message board hierarchy 8)

Yes, I used Pacifist, only extracted the Mail package. Then I replaced my current one by hand (and locked it, just to make me feel better 8).

I stay on this thread and will report back if it breaks again...

I am with the same problem: after using Service Scrubber the problems started.

Does anybody found a comprehensive way to fix the problem of Mail (disappearing passwords) and Keychain (not retaining passwords) ?

I'd thought I mention this for whatever it's worth. I had the same problem with esp one pop-mail account suddenly start naggin me about pw every 5 minutes or so. Then the other day I had an email "account is over quota". I seem to remember that in fact much the same thing happened to me long time ago under Tiger. I went in there and cleaned the server for emails and after this NO passwords! All works like a beaute.
Can't figure out why this triggers prompts of pws but for now problem solved.

I tried restoring Mail via Pacifist but it made no difference. Every third or fourth time I visit Mail the Advanced setting changes to APOP. This is driving me mad.

The solution by Johannes worked for me. I had installed Leopard and then a week or two later ran Service Scrubber. After that the mail password/keychain problem started. I used Time Machine to restore a copy of Mail before the Service Scrubber date. Fixed the saving of the password in the keychain for me. Thanks.

Hello

I'll try to be fast and simple, and I'm not a newbie

1st - I have 2 mac with leopard and in both of them 1 mail account is the same
2nd - one (the good one) was an upgrade and the other a fresh install
3rd - to zo219, gmail is not my only mail but is the one on both off my macs
4th - in one mac the password is stored and in the other is not
5th - the mac was working fine until for no reason it started asking for password
6th - even safari is not retrieving passwords in keychain (it just show the username not password)

Well, there must be something wrong because I reinstalled mail and did everything that is in this forum. And don't tell me to copy specifications from one mac to the other, it's done.

What is wrong with leopard.

Yes, not Safari 3.0.4 is starting to act up too. I'm beginning to wonder if it's a problem with Leopard's Keychain, instead of with Mail/Safari...

Found a solution

Instead of copy specifications I copied Mail and Keychain apps from one mac to the other, and there it was the passwords stored in the preferences/accounts. But I copied both apps at the same time so I do not know if the problem was Mail or Keychain.

The Safari after copying Mail and Keychain was still with problems (just show username not password),
then I did the same thing and voilá!! IT IS WORKING JUST FINE.

After saying this I believe that the problem is in Mail and Safari not in Keychain. Feel free to try one app at the time and report to this forum what you've found.

Sorry for my english, is not my language.

In this forum I see several reasons for the same problem.

1 - a third app mess with Mail, Safari and who knows what else
2 - bad account configuration
3 - bad keychain configuration

In all this reasons there is no need for Apple to solve this, because it's not a Leopard's bug and I see no way how they could.

1 - Reinstall or copy the app from another Mac, apple can't solve this because Mail app has many files, 200Mb off them and there are hundreds off third apps who could mess with mail
2 - A good account configuration is required
3 - A good keychain configuration can solve many things, but remember that keychain comes well configured.

I hope this solve the problem for you.
