pink line after installing 10.4.11
Posted: Nov 29, 2007 4:43 PM

After installing 10.4.11 my iMac has a pink line down the right hand side of the screen. At first it was fading in and out (refreshing?), now it is solid but is not in the same exact location each time (it is within a 1/4") which means the screen is fine. Can this be a driver issue with the graphics card since the update? Anyone else with this?

welcome to Discussions!
Try resetting PRAM, which often takes care of graphics issues:
1. Shut down.
2. Start up, and immediately hold down the keys: +option(alt)+P+R. Hold those keys until you hear the second 'dong'.
3. Let your mac start normally.

Good luck!

Helpful

if you create a new account (go to >System Preferences...>Accounts), does the pink line also appear there? Also, does the pink line appear even if there is a window over that spot?
Another thing you can try is repairing permissions and verifying disk:
Open disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities), clicking "Macintosh HD", and clicking "Repair Disk Permissions". Repeat that repair until no issues come up. Then click "Verify Disk". If an error comes up, post back and I will give you instructions on how to fix it.

If you get no errors on either of those (or fix them), you can try reinstalling the Combo Update.
1st, check if you have Intel or PPC:
Go to >About This Mac, and you will see Intel or PPC mentioned.

If you see Intel, get the update here, and if you see PPC, get the update here.

Good luck!

Josh - Thanks for your suggestions again. I tried all of them with no luck once again. The line is visible over all windows, but very faint through white. After installing the combo update, I repaired permissions and verified the disk a second time with no errors. I am happy to try any other suggestion you have. Thanks again.

that suggests a problem with your computer, or a system-wide preference.
Try putting in your install disk, shutting down, then booting up while holding 'd' to do a hardware test.
Let me know how that comes out!

Good luck!

I did the hardware test this morning, both normal and extended. All hardware tested fine, no errors reported. I guess the only thing to do now is re-install from disc 10.4.4? Thanks again for all your help.

Been a long time, but I think I'd drag this file to the Desktop & reboot... making a new one...

/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Or you could just test my theory by making a new User and logging into that one.

Thanks for your help Josh - it seems that the display is the issue, based on thread in another area of these forums it is a VERY common problem with 17" iMac serial #W860...U2N. Hopefully Apple will have a recall for affected units.
