Hi,
I just bought a new 160 GB IPOD Classic. Would I be best off upgrading to the 10.5 Leopard OS or the older 10.4 systems.
The specs for the IPOD classic detail 10.4.8 or later? Will the Leopard work well with my IMAC:
Machine Model: Mac
CPU Type: Power PC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 Hz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.9f1
Serial Number: QP312xxxxxx
Thanks

You meet the specifications for Leopard, although you just meet the minimum on RAM and your video card may not support the transparent dock (but then again some people are complaining they would rather not have the transparent dock). Since Tiger is no longer available your choice is to move to Leopard. Do a quick read through on the posts in the Leopard installation forum regarding steps to take prior to an install and you should be fine.

Well, then I'm afraid I have a problem…
Tiger is no longer available and Leopard will not work on my computer (700Mhz)…
I bought an iPod Classic (80G) and although I have iTunes 7.5, it doesn't connect to my computer.
So I wanted a new iPod and now I should buy a new Mac to make it work?? Hmm…
Suggestions, anyone?
Thanks,
J.

I would check Amazon and Small Dog (www.smalldog.com, I think) to see if there are still copies of Tiger available.

I found some new and used copies of Tiger on eBay.
"So I wanted a new iPod and now I should buy a new Mac to make it work?? Hmm…"
Here's a little computer tip for you. When you buy anything that is going to work with your computer, whether it be hardware, software, etc., read the minimum specifications on the box before completing your purchase.
If you are running a 700Mhz Mac it is time for you to consider a new one anyway. Which will now come with Leopard.

Yea, my new 80g wont work without a OS update from 10.3.9, but works fine on Windows XP? Sorry Apple, I'm not buying a new OS and I'm returning the new, useless ipod.
And it was a gift, so "eat me" with your comments of "read the min. requirements".
This is another in a long list of my personal problems with Apple.
I'm done. You've screwed me at least 7 times.

I am very irritated right now too.
I bought 3 of the 160gb version for Christmas presents. All of the people I gave the gifts to are Mac users and not one of them can use these iPods.
... they have graciously returned the gifts to me, which I guess I will have to return to the retailer.
What a huge disappointment.
On a side note, I also bought a new Macbook Pro laptop (17"). I also have a B&W Mac and one of the 1st gen Mac Minis. This experience with the iPod is so humiliating and embarrassing that I have to say this is the last Apple product I will purchase. I can understand upgrading iTunes, but upgrading the operating system is absolutely ludicrous.

I can understand your frustration Greg, but is it really Apple's fault? Their product does exactly what is advertised and it is outlined to work with what is stated in the system requirements.

JDidi,
Apple does have Tiger for sale, but it is available only through it's phone agents, not in the online store. Call (800) 275-2273, talk to tech support. It IS available, so keep asking.
Good luck.

dolbinau, are you a shareholder? I love my Mac but you cannot disagree that this problem is absolutely absurd. I, too, purchased a Classic Ipod for my son for Christmas but because I am running 10.3.9 it will not work. Apple should be ashamed that these iPods are not backwards compatible. Can someone tell whether my only option is to upgrade to Leopard? Thanks.

Yes, this is Apple's fault. As I rationally explained in another post (which has now been deleted), there does not appear to be any technical reason for this. I have always praised Apple engineers and this does not seem to be their method of doing things.
Allow me to break this down, from what I see, at a high level technical view:
1. The Mac must be able to mount, read, and write data to the iPod. This seems irrelevant to the version of the operating system (going back as far as I am able to all the versions of OS-X seem able to do this).
2. The Mac must be able to read the iTunes database (clearly it can, or iTunes would not work).
3. The Mac must be able to read and write the database sitting on the iPod.
Of these, only option #3 seems to be at issue here. Are we to believe that the code for doing this is buried so deeply inside the operating system that it cannot possibly be bundled together with the latest download of iTunes?
The changes I take note of with these iPods in question are:
1. The font was changed to Helvetica (absurd to think that this would require an upgrade to the OS)
2. It now utilizes a split-screen GUI (again, this is software running on the iPod, the OS version should not matter with the exception of the OS and iPod being able to read/write the database sitting on the iPod).
3. The firmware is now encrypted (doubtful this would be an issue because this only would seem to matter when the iPod is getting booted)
Apple seems committed to not answering us on this, leaving only one inescapable conclusion: that this was done purely in an attempt to get more money out of our wallets.
As for actual solutions to this, has anyone had any success dropping iTunes and using something like Floola, Songbird, or Yamipod? I think that may be my next step to try. If this doesn't work, or I am even slightly unhappy with the results, my next stop will be to return the approximately $1000 worth of iPods and accessories that I bought over Christmas and this will be the last Apple product I ever purchase - mostly because we seem unable to get an answer - leaving us with the obvious inescapable conclusion that there is just no good reason for this.

jDidi: you may want to try Yamipod, Songbird, or Floola - if you can get your iPod into disk mode. I've not used them and they definitely do not seem as feature-rich as iTunes. If you decide to do this, make sure to research it carefully and make sure it will work for you before doing anything.

You are only required to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
I am not an apple shareholder, and I agree it does suck they dropped support, just as they dropped support for firewire (IMO even a bigger problem), but, complaining that it will not work on your machine despite Apple clearly outlining the system requirements on the packaging of the iPod will not achieve anything . Even if they are doing it for the money...

shemar36,
I have researched this quite extensively and have decided on one of several solutions to this. You probably have reached the same conclusions by now, but I'll enumerate them here just in case (with some comments):
1. Upgrade the OS to Tiger (this isn't so bad, I have to admit that Tiger on my Macbook does seem a bit nicer then Panther on my mini, but I honestly couldn't tell you what the new features are... I basically just use terminal.app, which works fine (although I digress - sure wish it had a tabbed interface)..)
2. Stop using iTunes and switch to Floola, Songbird, or Yamipod (of these Floola seems like the best choice to me)
3. Return the "iPod Classic" and get an older version (this should send a message to Apple and other manufacturers, but it would likely fall on deaf ears)
4. Wait to see if Apple responds with an update to fix this issue (to be honest, I wouldn't rule this one out yet, depending on how many people return the iPods for this reason - as I have reasoned this out there is no technical reason for this, so it should be an easy fix)
5. Wait until the iPod classics get in the hands of hackers for a while and they find a solution (this is such an absurd situation and people love to hack on the iPod, so its only a matter of time in my view)
6. <edited by host>
As far as I can tell, the iPods (for purposes of syncing) is essentially an external disk drive (and nobody has disagreed with me on this point yet). This situation is, frankly, inexcusable from a company like Apple whose mottos of "ease of use", "it just works", etc now appear to be a lot of hot-air. None of these solutions are even really solutions, but its all that are available to us - I sincerely hope that one of them will work ok for you.
