I have a Maxtor 160GB 2.5" HDD that I use for Time Machine and some other stuff. It works fine on my two Macbooks (2.0GHz Core Duo and 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo) but I get USB 1.1 speeds on my iBook G4 1.2GHz that I just installed Leopard on. Worked fin in Tiger when I was backing it up, and was working fine until I tried to run Time Machine on it. I don't want to format the drive, as I don't have anywhere else to to backup my Time Machine backups. Could it have anything to do with the fact that the drive was formatted on an Intel machine? It is very frustrating.

USB interface speed has nothing to do with how a drive was formatted or anything like that.
I don't know why that keeps coming up.
USB speed issues are due to bugs in MacOS, just like the USB video issues that cause kernel panics when using certain video devices.
For me, Leopard 10.5.1 update fixed my USB speed issue, but the video issue remains.

I am wondering if the following will help.
I use bootcamp. I have created folders in windows vista on the usb flash drive. If I try to copy a file to those folders created in windows the transfer speeds are very slow. If I copy the file to the root of the usb drive I get normal usb 2.0 transfers. I hope this helps if it applies to you.

I was using an external 2.5" IDE hard drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure. I was connecting and disconnecting the drive daily for a photo shoot when, on the last day of the shoot, transferring files and accessing the drive was very, very slow. All other devices remained unchanged except the drive so I know the hub, cables and all that were not to blame because they had all worked just fine days before. When the slowness occurred it seemed that the entire USB bus ran slow. My firewire devices were not impacted of course. I changed to another enclosure, tried different cables, tried removing all other usb devices other than the keyboard and mouse, nothing seemed to work until I did the following:
This is on a 17" iMac with 10.5.1 so your milage may vary.
1. Disconnected all external devices (USB and firewire) except keyboard and mouse (both usb with mouse plugged into keyboard usb port).
2. Logged off all users
3. Powered off the computer.
4. Powered computer back on and logged on admin user and waited for the system to settle a bit.
5. Plugged in the troublesome hard drive to a USB port directly on the iMac.
That restored full speed to my USB bus. I then properly ejected the HD and reconnected all my goodies and everything was back to normal.

The USB speed will be the restricted to the speed of the less fast USB device device on the network,

Incorrect.
Some USB equipment might have the limitation, but it shouldn't.
Even a properly designed hub can handle multiple speeds.

Thank you, you are right, that is correct.
I've always wondered:
Is the speed limited to the USB modem/router on the network?
If I use a 800 FW HD and I connect a 400 FW HDisk to the 800 FW Hard drive's additional Firewire port. Is the speed from the hard drives 400 or 800 at the mac's 800 firewire port?
? If so than I might have been slower than would have been possible for some time... :/

This is still an ongoing problem and daily headache for me. I do power my Mac off every night and use my 320GB USB2.0 drive as a Time Machine device. It is driving me NUTS as I don't want to have to keep plugging and unplugging the thing every time I want use it!
Why is this problem just getting no official acknowledgement or anything?
My drive is a Seagate Freeagent. I'd blame the drive but it looks like a wider problem with Leopard. I'd buy a FW400 drive instead but i'm broke at the moment, and don't think i'd easily be able to take the Freeagent back to the store because technically there is nothing wrong with it!
Here's hoping that it gets fixed in 10.5.2.

Add me to the list of people having problems. I only acquired this problem after upgrading to 10.5.2
Switching which USB port the drives are plugged in to only temporally fixes the problem. No only hard drives are affected by this bug but it also causes USB flash drives to not be detected and iPods to not be detected by the system.
Apple ignoring this problem is totally unacceptable but seems to be in Apple style.

After struggling with this for quite some time on my FreeAgent 500GB USB drive, I've found that the fix for this is to set the drive's sleep timer to "never." When the drive puts itself to sleep, it consistently wakes back up attached to the Mac's low-speed USB 1.1 bus (not the high-speed 2.0 bus, where it should attach).
Unfortunately, and IMO altogether ridiculously, the Mac version of their FreeAgent Drive Manager software doesn't allow you to change that setting.
The only way to permanently fix this issue is to hook the drive up to a Windows PC (or drop into XP bootcamp, if it's installed on your Mac), download and install the Seagate FreeAgent Desktop software for XP, and use its Drive Manager utility to set the power management sleep timer to "never."
Note that the drive will be recognized in XP, but it'll come up as "UNKNOWN" if you've Mac-formatted the drive. This doesn't matter. The power management part of the utility is just changing settings for the enclosure, not for the actual drive itself.
Hope this info helps.
*Note that this pertains specifically to Seagate FreeAgent drives, but the problem may be similar on other manufacturers' drives. Check with your manufacturer to see if there is any way to disable power management or "sleep" on your external drive.

Turning spotlight indexing off on my thumb drive seems to have brought transfer speeds back to normal.
Lame, but fine with me as I don't need spotlight to search this thumb drive.

i am having this same problem! i have a mac pro with leopard and i am having major speed issues with my usb devices, whether they are hooked up through a hub or directly to the mac. my flash drives, my memory card reader, and even my ipod are all suffering from usb 1.1 speeds. when i look at 'about my mac' it tells me that they are connected with high speed usb, capable of 480mbps, yet it took my memory card reader over four hours to dump 4.3gb of photos, a task that previously took less than 10 minutes. this is unacceptable for a $3000+ mac pro.
both my mac pro and leopard are now outside of the 90 day free phone support window, so my only options are to pay for support or lug my mac pro into an apple store.
somebody please help me! it is alarming to see that there is no resolution to this problem yet.

Hi,
I have this problem also with a 4Gb USB stick and a 512Mb compact flash card in an USB reader. I use a MacBook with 10.5.2 with imported user settings from a 10.2 system.
I already tried without effect to:
* use a powered usb hub
* reformat and repartition the compact flash card with GUID partition table
* exclude from spotlight indexing
In the /var/log/system.log I get regular entries like:
May 6 01:04:43 MacBook kernel[0]: USBF: 200.695 AppleUSBEHCI0x67d8000::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 3, EP: 2)
At some point back I didn't have this problem. I think it started with either 10.5.1 or 10.5.2. With 10.5.0 it worked fine.
The symptoms that I get are that applications (for example Finder) that access the USB device seem to stop responding although if you wait long enough (minutes instead of seconds) the application responds again. System information shows the USB device capable of 12 Mb/sec instead of 480 Mb/sec.
