GSM Buzz and best speakers.
Posted: Nov 10, 2007 6:19 AM

I know about the GSM buzz I am just trying to find a pair of computer speakers that do are sheilded properly to hopefully avoid this buzz...

I have tried a couple of speakers now all the way up to the Bose computer speakers and every one that I have tried have the GSM buzz when the iPhone is sitting on my desk...

Anyone have any recommendations on a good pair of computer speakers that block the GSM buzz?

This should be possible since I have never heard the internal speakers in my iMac ever buzz but I prefer some better external speakers...

I have a Klipsch 2.1 computer speaker setup that I bought probably about 5 years ago and I don't hear even the faintest GSM buzz with my iPhone commonly about 2-feet from the sub/amp. Can't vouch for their recent stuff, but you might try the brand and see.

You can go to Radio Shack and ask them for some ferrite beads. You can buy them and place them on a the cables that go to the speakers run the lines thru the ferrite twice by looping and this will kill the GSM noise. I you can't find any ferrite PM me and I will send you some free.

iphone-home,

Most speakers intended for use near CRT computer monitors are shielded to prevent the magnets in them from interfering with computer screens. Some of the less expensive models are not shielded. I had a pair I picked up for $1.99 at a local computer store that would give my monitor at the time a purple dot if they got too near.

However, the cables themselves are often not shielded. Adding ferrite beads or "ground loop isolator" as they are called by many car audio shops will often resolve the issue. If you use an audio extension cable, it would need to be shielded as well.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

Thanks... I will try some ferrite beads to see if that helps... I was hoping that a more expensive set of speakers would be a fix so I went out and purchased the Bose Companion® 2 Series II multimedia speaker but they ended up having more noise than my cheaper ones and the worst part is the Bose speakers can not be turned off and turning the volume all the way down does not make a difference...

Off to RadioShack now to buy some ferrite beads... I will post back and let you know if that solves it for me...

Thanks!

Guess it will have to wait until next week... No one carries ferrites locally that I could find that was open... RadioShack people didn't even know what they were which didn't really surprise me... Tried all the other Pro Audio stores to...

iphone-home,

Most audio places will know them as "Ground loop isolater" or just simply "Ground loops". They are often installed on car audio equipment to help prevent GSM from interfering with car audio.

Typically they come with either connectors on them, or preferably one of the units you can loop the cord through.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

Nathan,

The ground loop isolator with the ends on it may work on one connection but not the other so where do you think the best place for the isolator to be placed?

Right now my Bose speakers have a 3.5 mm cable going from the computer to the right speaker and then 2 RCA connections from the right speaker to the left speaker... Ultimately I assume putting some kind of ferrite on both cables would be best but if I just put the ground loop isolator on the 2 RCA connections do you think that would help at all or would that just stop the interference on the left speaker only?

It seems like my right speaker gets more interference right now than my left speaker and the right one is the one that has the amp in it.

iphone-home,

I have not had to do it myself, and am passing along suggestions other users have made in these discussions. The ring type that slip on seem to be preferable, because if you need to loop it around more than once you can.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

If you can't find any Ferrite beads anywhere I have lots of them. If you need the email at kgoshia@msn.com with your address and I will send you some.

Hey, just chiming in to see if you got the Ferrites, and if they worked! I have H/K soundsticks and they Buzz is louder than any other phone I've ever used. In fact, it even interfered with my Girlfriend's older TV this weekend...7 feet away!!!

Wow, this thing must be frying my brain and making me Sterile... But I still love it...

Found a solution!! I set out to find a solution today and to make a long story short, here's what I settled on: taping two small pieces of aluminum foil on the back of the iPhone in a specific location (pic 1):

1) Cut out a 2" x 3" piece of aluminum foil.
2) Fold foil in half horizontally (foil is now 2" x 1.5").
3) Tape foil from the bottom right corner (on the back of the phone) up to the middle of the text "iPhone" (pic 2, pic 3).
4) No more buzz/static/popping sounds coming out of your speakers!

Another solution, to avoid using tape (although electrical tape leave no residue what-so-ever on the iPhone), is simply placing the iphone on a sheet of aluminum foil. This might be a better idea for people experiencing this problem in a static environment rather than a car (i.e. iPhone on office desk with nearby computer speakers). After discovering this solution, I also saw another potential solution online, using aluminum foil wrapped around the audio cable coming out of the phone. I haven't tested that method, but it looks much more obtrusive.

For me, other materials didn't work (at least not perfectly). I also tried various sizes of aluminum foil in various locations - you could probably get by with a smaller amount of foil, but this amount works 100% (so far at least).

I guess it should also be noted this solution could potentially work for other GSM phones with this issue (i.e. blackberries, sidekicks) - you'll just have to experiment with the size of the foil and its location.

Hope this helps!
