I'm having the same problem with my iPod Touch 16GB - I received the message "the iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (1604)" It is stuck in recovery mode, subsequent attempts to restore have all failed.

Hi Frederico and Matthews,
Friends I was freaking the same way and done the same mistake as u people did. But I was successful in solving this problem.
"THE FIRST AND FOREMOST BLUNDER THAT WE HAVE DONE IS OUR ITUNES VERSION SHOULD BE 7.6 IN ORDER TO UPDATE THE IPOD SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE TO 1.1.3 FROM WHAT EVER OLDER VERSION WE HAVE."
***MAKE SURE THE ACTUAL EXISTING VERSION OF THE ITUNES ON YOUR
COMPUTER/LAPTOP
STEP 1:Friends what I have done is I disconnected my IPOD from my laptop and
firstly downloaded the ACTUAL (EXISTING OLDER) ITUNES version (7.5) that I
initially had while i was DOING THE BLUNDER OF UPDATING THE FIRMWARE TO
1.1.3.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE OLDER VERSIONS FROM THIS SITE:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/?3694
STEP 2: Once the ITUNES (older version) dump is available on your computer
uninstall the ITUNES and all the IPOD related stuff from your computer
from Start>Control panel>ADD/Remove programs.
Step 3: Restart ur computer and reinstall that older version ITUNES software
again.
Open the ITUNES software.
Step 4: Now connect your IPOD and the ITUNES will prompt you that an IPOD in
recovery mode is detected. It will ask you if u want to recover it to the
factory settings by clicking on "restore" under the "summary" tab on
ITUNES. Before doing this the very important step we need to do is to
UPDATE THE ITUNES VERSION FROM THE EXISTING OLDER VERSION TO 7.6 WHICH IS
VERY IMPORTANT.
STEP 5: To do this click on the HELP menu on the top and click on CHECK FOR
UPDATES. Thats it the ITUNES will be updated to latest version which will
allow us to update the IPOD'S FIRMWARE to 1.1.3 as well.
STEP 6: Now go to the summary tab of the IPOD and click on restore> wait for the
restoration process to carry on and the IPOD should be running back to
normal.
WELL FRIENDS THIS WHAT I HAVE DONE ON MY IPOD AND THE PROBLEM IS SORTED.
I HOPE THIS SHOULD SORT YOUR PROBLEMS AS WELL.

Even though I had already upgraded to iTunes 7.6 before having this problem, I followed the recommendation, removed all the Apple software in the order listed, turned off antivirus, downloaded and installed iTunes. I still receive the error "An unknown error has occurred. (1604)" when attempting to recover the iPod - pretty much at the beginning of the process. The iPod is ejected from iTunes.
Please help!

Hi Matthew,
I have a small suggestion to you:
1. Uninstall all the apple and Itunes related softwares from your computer.
2. Assuming that u have a Windows XP on ur laptop/Computer create a new user
with ADMIN rights. Now restart ur computer/laptop.
3. And now install the version of ITUNES that u had while u were upgrading the
firmware(ie while u came accross the problem)
4. And then try connecting the IPOD and restore it through ITNUES.
**** MAKE SURE THAT WHILE DOING STEPS 1,2,3 THE IPOD IS DISCONNECTED FROM
LAPTOP/COMPUTER.
I hope this should sort ur problem........!!!!!!
Good Luck buddy....!!!!

I was finally able to get around this problem by installing iTunes 7.6 on a Dell Win XP laptop. When I first tried to restore the iPod Touch, I received the same "unknown error" I had received on my desktop. Out of desperation, I started over again by disconnecting the iPod, shutting down iTunes, starting iTunes again, reconnecting the iPod and the second time it worked. I was then able to restore the iPod on my desktop. This is some flaky software, imho.

Update your iTunes and it will work. It should update iTunes 7.6 something. Just go to your help tab in iTunes and it will run an update. After that try and restore your iPod and presto it should work.
