Subject line stripped when sending mail with large numbers of bcc addresses

I use Mail.app to send a newsletter to ~800 addresses. The mail is addressed to myself and the recipients are put in the bcc field. This worked fine many times under Tiger.
If I send mails in the same way with Mail.app 3.1 under Leopard the subject line is stripped. The mail in my sent folder does show the subject line but recipients do not see it.
Normal mails work just fine, the subject line gets through OK. Its only a problem when I have a large number of addresses in the bcc field.
This is a big problem for me as mails with no subject line seem to be rejected as spam by some filters. The christmas newsletter hasn't reached a lot of clients and therefore a lot of business will be lost.

An associate at work is experiencing the same issue. She has OS X 10.5 installed on a iBook and the recipient list is a little over 800. As the "computer guy" at the office, I've scoured the web for solutions or at the very least to find others experiencing the same problem, and yours (jackherer) is the first I've come across. Hopefully an update to Mail is on the horizon.

I'll just add my name to the "me too" list. Nowhere near 800 in the bcc field (closer to 200).

Me too; no idea for a fix. This is very aggravating.

10.5.2 fixes this issue, although it is not mentioned in the list of changes. Thanks Apple!

I'm having the exact same problem as outlined by others before. My .bcc field is close to 1,100 recipients.
The problem has only started in the past few weeks, and I've been on this new iMac since November 2007.
Like others, regular emails are fine. The subject line shows up in my 'sent' file, but is gone when the item arrives in my mailbox and others. And the missing subject line seems to cause many people to not receive the email (a weekly newsletter in my case).
The last poster in this thread says 10.5.2 fixes this problem, but that has NOT been my experience.
Help, please!

Wow. I'm having an even stranger problem: my bcc field stopped working, or, is only working intermittently from Apple Mail from Leopard. It's not just the subject line: all my BCC emails are jetting off into the ether! I had no problem with this, in OS X. I know it is not my ISP, because my email account works fine with the BCC from inside its online program. ***?

Rick,
Will the Bcc work with only one or two addresses? Who is the provider of the SMTP used as Outgoing Server?

Since web based access of your email account does not use the SMTP to send, it does not eliminate problems with the SMTP (which this sounds like) from the mix. Are you reporting that this only happens when there are Bcc recipients? Is there always at least address in the To Header? More info, please.

Ernie: Thanks for your efforts.
I use earthlink as a provider. Bcc works fine with (much) smaller fields.
This week, as an experiment, I limited to bcc fields to <250 people, and it seemed to work fine.
And there have been times in the past when it worked with the full compliment of ~1,100 recipients.
Thanks for your efforts.

I am having the same problem and I am on the latest Leopard (10.5.4) This has happened twice to me now. Once with ~1000 addresses in the bcc field and just 5 minutes ago with ~7000 addresses. This is a major issue for me as I sent out a survey for market research. I don't need to tell you what my response rate will be with an empty subject line. Re-sending the email is not an option either.
Please fix this! (apart from the fact that sending a mail to a large number of recipients is excruciatingly slow)
