Ever since I upgraded to the newest version of Itunes, it won't open anymore. I get this message: QT failed to initialize error -2096, please reinstall QT. I've done all this & still not working. Any suggestions cause I have reinstalled Itunes & QT so many times & its not working!!!!!

I've had it for days with that **** 2096 error message from quicktime that it updated automatically and told me to do afterwards. But keeps blaming Itunes but it's quicktime as usual being a pain in the butt. Noone answers or seems to know what the problem is.

Did you get any answers to this problem. Our itunes is just now doing this. Well, I guess it's actually Quicktime. If you resolved your problem, could you let me know what you did. Thanks.

( I had the same prob. this worked for me..Good luck...)

1.Quit iTunes.
2. Windows XP and Windows 2000: On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
-Windows Vista: On the Start menu, click Computer.
4. In My Computer, open the C:\ drive (or whichever disk your Windows XP is installed on).
5. Open the Program Files folder.
6. Open the iTunes folder.
7. Right-click on the iTunes application (iTunes or iTunes.exe) and from the shortcut menu, click Properties.
8. Click the Compatibility tab.
9. Deselect the checkbox under Compatibility mode if it's selected.
10. Click OK.
11. Open iTunes and play a song.

I am getting this problem too, however I looked at the compatibility settings and it is NOT checked for either QuickTime or iTunes. There doesn't seem to be any support articles where this is not the case.

I have Windows XP 64-bit, and am get the message when installing iTunes that it is highly recommended for me to install the 64-bit edition of iTunes. However I have searched the Apple site and also various forums and a 64-bit edition does not seem to exist!

I have just purchased an new 160gb iPod Classic and at present cannot use it!

Please help!!

I have the exact same issue. I upgraded 7.6 today after being at 7.x (4? maybe?). I just played a song before I did the install today. Closed iTunes, run the update, and now I get this error.

Directions on turning off compabitibilty did not work because both QuickTime and iTunes have compatibility turned off.

I am running Windows 2003.

I am receiving the same error when upgrading just Quicktime from 7.2 to 7.4. This is on a Windows 2003 Server image. I was previously able to run QuickTime 7.2 fine on Windows Server. I have tried the fix of adjusting the compatibility, with no success. Is there another idea for correcting this? Is QuickTime just not supporting Server 2003 anymore? Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm using XP 64 bit. I was unable to get QT 7.4 to install and thus could not get iTunes 7.6 to run. I went back and installed QT 7.3 and it seems to make both iTunes 7.6 and QT 7.3 run. I do get an error that I cannot burn CD's with iTunes though. It's pretty lame that Apple finally made a 64bit version but it's only for Vista. XP64 is pretty solid so I definitely don't want to move to Vista 64 over this issue.

Here is how I fixed it on my Windows 2003 machine. Installed the latest version of Itunes, unistalled Quicktime, reinstalled quicktime 7.3.1 via http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime731forwindows.html . I then went through and disabled all auto-updating of Quicktime/Itunes.

I guess Apple assumes people running Windows Server 2003 should already be tech savvy enough to struggle through this.

So far so good

I've got the same problem, i've removed 7.4.1 and installed 7.3.1 without any luck.
jimtomas mentioned disabling all auto-updating of QuickTime/iTunes, i've opened QuickTime but can't find where to do this, can anyone please help with this or any other suggestions.

Thanks for that, worked perfectly. Was starting to tear my hair out :)
I wonder if Apple knows that this is an issue on Win2k3, or whether they just don't support that OS.
