I've just experienced a similar problem, but I'm not sure whether this is relevant, as I don't know if I have a SR machine ... (how do you tell this?)
I was calibrating the battery (working until it went to sleep), and received three "You are now working on reserve power" notices (at 10, 9 and 8 minutes). I continued to work, and at about the right time the Mac shut down (or went to sleep - I couldn't tell).
I plugged the power adapter in and let it charge for a half hour before plugging in my peripherals (display, keyboard, mouse, USB hub and stick, iPod) and opening it up again. Instead of jumping right to life, the optical drive hummed, and I got a greyish-blue blank screen. I tried waking it from sleep (pressing keys, moving the mouse, pressing esc), then pushing the power button briefly, but to no avail. All I got was I a grey screen with the Apple logo - but no spinning straws... I tried several times, but nothing. When I held down the power button for about 5 secs, then it finally restarted. Fortunately everything had been saved...
Any thoughts?

I had the same problem... bought my macbook a week ago. First battery drain went ok, the macbook pulled out the warning and after some minutes went to sleep. But after it began to shutdown after the warning... After 3 hard shutdowns I started to plug the adapter on low battery warning.. and the next day... tried again.. and it never happened again.. how wEiRd is that? I made about 3 drains... and it went to sleep gracefully... and I did no reset to SMC or PRAM..

I just solved this problem. Check your system profiler power settings. If your cycle count is less than 300 (and if you purchased your mac within the last 2 years) you can call apple and get a free replacement! I'm so happy that I can do this!

If you read the battery update link you gave the extra warranty only applies to the original core duo MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
This is from the link you gave.
For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.
Also the OP has a brand new SR MacBook so it is still covered by the regular warranty.

Hi, thanks for posting this.
Howver I called Apple today (I'm based in Ireland so I assume I was talking to someone in their Cork centre) and despite my Macbook fitting the criteria listed, I still can't get a battery replacement! It seems there's more to it than meets the eye.
They asked for info regarding the Full Charge Capacity (it's 3854) and Remaining Capacity (3736) and cycle count (281) and it turns out my battery is still healthy. I think what he was saying is that if the remaining capacity is within 80% of the full charge capacity, all is well.
He suggested taking it to an Apple store (with the case number he gave me) and see how the battery behaves in another Macbook. If it works fine in another MB, then the problem may be with how the motherboard and components are feeding the power.
If that is the problem, then I'd imagine I'd have to bear the cost!

Same problem here. The dialog box about low battery charge it's shown, but if I left the computer run out of battery, it doesn't sleep, directly shutdown without save state.

I have exactly the same problem. Tried everything, including resetting SMC. What do I have to do next?

I have the same problem. MacBook Release 1.1 Battery Cycles 167. I am NOT using Leopard, as I have been unable to install it despite all attempts.
Guess now, I have two things to talk about at the Genius Bar.
Thanks for posting this.

same problem here- I, unfortunately, took some bad advice and deleted the 1.3 update and attempted to install the 1.2.. No go, says my system doesn't require that update..

Yeah, it's only been affecting my MB for about the last month -- pretty much since the last Software Update, IIRC.
Am hoping that, if Apple messed up something, the next SU will fix it. In the meantime, I'm going to call them about the battery replacement programme, just in case.

PS - I don't even get the low battery alert. It just falls over with no warning.
PPS - based on post above, doesn't look like i'm in line for a new battery, either.

One thing that might be a factor is that when I'm not running an app that uses the Java Virtual Machine, the battery warnings and everything behave as normal, whereas if I'm using something that calls on the JVM, i get the sudden-death thing...
Off to the Apple Store to buy a new battery. Not happy at having to spend £100 on it. I bet there's a large profit on Li-ion power packs...

Edit of above. Might not be when JVM is running, just when Flash Player is running (I'm running the debug version of FP 9,0,124,0)
