Printing to Windows Shared Printer
Posted: Jan 27, 2008 4:09 PM

Hi everyone, I've search on the forums here and I've tried several solutions but to no avail. Basically the problem is that I can't print to a shared Windows printer on my home network. I have no problem finding and printing to the printer on my other Windows PCs, but I've had no luck with either of my Macs.

The printer is an Epson 2200. I've tried the following solution and I've only been able to get it working on my MBP, not my new Macbook (I set it up exactly the same but everytime I try to print it just freezes the app trying to print):

1. Open your system preferences > Open Print & Fax
2. Click + to add a printer.
3. Right-click on the Toolbar at the top and select "Customise Toolbar..."
4. Drag the "Advanced" icon to the toolbar & select "Done"
5. Click the "Advanced" icon
6. Select "Windows" from the "Type:" drop down menu
7. In the "URL:" textbox type the location of your windows printer in the format
below (use the format depending on whether your Windows PC sharing the Printer
has a password or not):
smb://username:password@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does have a
password
smb://username@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does NOT have a
password
(eg. smb://barney@125.254.95.101/ip4300)
8. Enter a Name and Location. (Human Friendly Names with Spaces are allowed)
9. Now select the appropriate driver and then click "Add"
10. Try printing somthing and then it will ask for a username and password of
your windows server. Type and username and then the password and then add this
to your keychain and click OK.

I've also tried setting it up through CUPS, but I've only been able to get to the end where it asks for a user name and password and I can't figure out what the correct usage is (I'm assuming its the login and pass for the Windows machine? My macbook doesn't have a password on the account).

Is there an easier solution to get this working? Sadly this is one thing about Macs that is less than "simple" for me as compared to PCs. Thanks!

It generally is easier than having to do all that you have tried. When you add a printer, by selecting Windows, you should see the printer sharing PC. Then when you double click the PC name, you should be prompted to authenticate (unless you have enabled the Guest account on the PC). The printer share name should then be displayed and when you select it, you will then have to browse to the Gutenprint 2200 driver, as you generally cannot use the vendor provided drivers for connecting to Windows shares.

If the above doesn't work then a couple of suggestions.

1. Create an account on the PC that the Mac can use. Then you can follow the advanced procedure and for the smb user name and password, you can use this new account. Note that when you do enter the details into the smb printer queue, you should not have to authenticate to the PC again.

2. Change the share name on the PC so that there are no spaces as they can cause problems.

Hi PAHU, thanks for the quick reply.

When I click on the Windows tab, I do see the Windows workgroup of my home network in the leftmost box, but the name of the PC that the printer is connected to never shows up in the boxes to the right (it's like it is never able to see the PC name).

Perhaps I should mention too that any Windows shared folders never show up under the "Shared" section in Finder, I always have to do the "Connect to Server" option and then directly input the IP address for the computer.

The name of my PC workgroup is home2, and the shared printer name is epson2200 (without any spaces). I also have an admin account on my Windows machine that I've been able to use with the advanced method I detailed in my first post to connect my MBP to the shared printer, but the same method doesn't seem to work on the macbook.

Perhaps I'll try re-naming the workgroup back to workgroup and see if that helps any.
