Early 2008 Mac pro freeze - anyone ?

I just deployed my 2.8 Mac Pro yesterday, and within two days, I had three instances when the computer froze. The mouse pointer was still moving on the screen, but apart from that, no response to keys or clicks. There was also one instance when the video signal to the monitor was lost. In each case, I had to do a hard reboot. Anyone else experiencing those problems ?

Be sure to repair your drive before you continue working.
Yes, I have.
As a workaround for Apple bug 5679432 (Mac OS X hang under heavy disk load when unbuffered I/O is in use), VMware Fusion 1.1.1 disables unbuffered disk I/O on Mac OS X 10.5 hosts, even when the user selects Optimize for Mac OS application performance in VMware Fusion preferences.
http://www.vmware.com/support/fusion/doc/releasenotes_fusion.html#new111
Keep your system backed up regularly, and hope it won't be long to get a fix out.

I've experienced the same problem reported in the parent post. The mouse cursor moves, but nothing responds. Both times I was simply browsing the web in Safari.
So the solution in this case is to leave VMware running in the background?

Check out the reader feedback:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/2008_mac_pro_reports.htm
Not related to the issue you are seeing (I suspect that once there is an "official" build for Leopard, post 10.5.1+ that the code and support for Mac Pro (2008) will improve, similar to what we say with 10.4.7+ when the 2006 unit shipped and 10.4.8 finally came out).

Oh yes, and check out this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1358062&tstart=0
BTW, I've just sent mine back and I'm waiting for my replacement as we speak.
Also there are numerous forum threads with regards to this exact issue.

Some think it's the ATI card.
It's a similar card to the ATI 2600 in the Aluminium iMacs that kept freezing after release. There was a firmware fix for this card. Hoping whatever they fixed is already fixed in your card.
At least you got your MP, some of us have been waiting 3 weeks (on a suggested 3-5 week shipping date) because we went for the 8800GT. So 3 weeks on it still says 2-3 weeks.

Just thought I would chime in, having this crash, with mouse functional, but system locked and two instances of video signal to monitor loss. three hard reboots today. I am also using the ATI card, waiting for 8800 availability.

I've had a similar crash at least 3 times over the last two days; the mouse still moves but the system is unresponsive and I get random static all over my display. I am also using the ATI HD 2600, ROM/EFI revision info below:

I'd just like to report that I have the same problem. That is (for the most part) freezes with graphics artifacts, but with a live mouse pointer. I have also had som freezes with a completely frozen screen.

A lot of people with New 8 core Mac Pros and the ATI HD 2600 graphics card are reporting system lock-ups / freezes, where the mouse still responds. Sometimes the graphics get munged when this happens. The current "theory" is that the ATI HD 2600 card is to blame - this is only a theory!
The first thing anyone should do when your Mac Pro freezes is to check your system.log file for any suspect entries that may have been made before or during the freeze. Many people are reporting kernel GPU errors. Post any such messages here.

Following up...I haven't had as much as a glitch since the apple software update of last weekend. This was not from the big 10.5.2 update yesterday, but rather a small update from the 8th or 9th. Hopefully this issue is being resolved for everyone.

I received my 2.8 Octo/GeForce 8800GT Mac Pro today, been using, installing, rebooting with zero defects, crashes, freezes, lockups or anything strange.
I put a new drive in it (WD1500 10K Raptor) and reloaded OS X, formatted the stock drive, updated to 10.5.2.
The computer came stock with a Seagate drive. 7200.10, I believe.

I have been having major problems with my mac pro. There is ofcourse the reboot from sleep issue which happens every once in a while but I also am having issues with my keyboard and mouse being detected on startup. Sometimes it just won't show up unless I reboot again. Also, am having constant crashes when doing video chat in ichat. Freezes ever few minutes. Going to take it back today for a replacement.
