Linotype FontExplorer Causing Apps To Hand On Load
Posted: Feb 11, 2008 3:35 PM

Post 10.5.2 update many of my applications were hanging on load. They'd bounce 20-30 times and then just stop. The process was hung (not responding) and required a force quit. Looking at the stack trace from the crash reports it appears that the application is requesting font info from ATSServer. So I created a new/vanilla user account and logged in and everything was fine. Logging back into my normal account I could not start the Apps (Photoshop, Launchbar, etc); quitting FontExplorer solved the problem.

Just a post to for anyone else who might come across the same issue.

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks. I was having problems with SystemUIServer running away, but that's been cured by disabling FontExplorer.

I don't know if this is related, but I don't use FontExplorer and I still have font problems since the update. Maybe something changed in the way fonts are treated. My CS3 apps, iPhoto etc. are all working, but I get, off and on, an error saying that "Helvetica Bold failed to load ..."

Well, looks like we're still beta testing ...

I have some applications that hang when starting up and very very many applications hang for various different reasons. Mail.app hangs when showing some (but not all) messages, for example.

Quting Font Explorer X has so far made the problems go away.

Chapeau to Linotype developers for very fast problem solving!
There is an update for Font Explorer that seems to fix the bug, use FE built-in update function, or here's the link for a full installation: http://fex.linotype.com/FontExplorerX123.dmg
