no video on export --
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 8:29 AM

I have updated imovie 08 - reinstalled quicktime pro -- and tried every different share option -- all appear to export fine but when playing the mp4 -- I have title audio but no video -- blank black screen --- video played fine during editing -- I am sure this is a codec issue of some kind but i can't find any instructions to resolve -- Video was captured with Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M2 -- video clips all appear in imovie and play no problem - but can't export -- I have tried various types of quicktime pro exports -- but the h.264 should work and doesn't -- any thoughts on how to fix -- this issue has made iMovie anything but easy -- export to itunes, you tube, .mac -- all have same result of black video -- PLEASE HELP -- extremely frustrated at this point

I downloaded a sample file (M4V00344.MP4) from the DSRP Review site and had no problems creating and "sharing" a quick project. Check your "Event" clips to ensure you did not convert the original source files to Apple Animation or Apple Video at some point. These two codecs will edit and export as your describe.

How can i tell what format the imovie events are?? When I open my camera - iPhoto imports both video and pics -- then when I open imovie the iPhoto videos are brought in -- as far as I know I am not doing anything to the mp4 format the videos are recorded in. --

Open a clip in the QT Player and check the "Inspector" window and check the "Format:" line for audio and video information.

iPhoto imports both video and pics -- then when I open imovie the iPhoto videos are brought in -- as far as I know I am not doing anything to the mp4 format the videos are recorded in.

Then you could try converting a "test" file, import it into iMovie '08, and make a quick project to see if it then exports properly. If you have QT Pro, you can also check the "Properties" window to see if there are any "extraneous" tracks included in you camera's clips (although I don't see why this would create the problem you describe).

I'm having the same problem. I've been importing video from my Casio Exilim 8.1 Megapixel, in .mov format, and it seems I can't import .MOV into iTunes. That's gripe number one. Anyway, I converted my .MOV files to .AVI, and then imported them. Then I created a movie which rendered fine on the mac, but anytime I export it, the only thing that shows up is the audio and the titles. Now, I saw the below thread, and I couldn't figure out what was what. I tried updating the DIVX codec, but of course nothing.

Thoughts?

Thanks so much for your time.

Not sure if you are really referring to iTunes or iMovie importation here. Casio digital cameras use quite a number of different compression format combinations in either AVI or MOV files containers. In many (or most) cases, the video content is not the problem -- rather it is the audio that is the problem. Models using M-JPEG, MPEG-4, and/or H.264 video content is usually video compatible with iMovie '08. Unfortunately, Casio often uses "adaptive" PCM audio which is not iMovie '08 compatible. (Usually the DVI ADPCM compression format.) In the case of MPEG-4 and/or H.264 video, you can easily use the QT Pro or GarageBand "Movie to MPEG-4" export option to "pass through" the video content while converting the audio to an AAC format which is compatible with iMovie '08. (I'd recommend 64 Kbps mono or 128 stereo at 44.1 KHz.) This work flow keeps the original video in tact. Unfortunately, this approach will not work with the M-JPEG/DVI ADPCM combination. And, while you can convert the audio to AIFF and replace the original audio with QT Pro, most users simply convert both audio and video to a fully compatible compression format rather than perform conversions at the "track" level.
