Flash Crashes Safari...
Posted: Jan 25, 2008 3:38 PM

Safari Version 3.0.4 (5523.10.6); System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B18); Kernel Version: Darwin 9.1.0; Flash 9.0 r115

I continue to be astonished by the lack of fix (or) workaround from either Apple or Adobe.

There are at least three sites that I continually use (mostly pay/membership sites) which crash at different times and in different places with the same error.

Here is part of the error report to Apple:

Process: Safari 4547
Path: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
Identifier: com.apple.Safari
Version: 3.0.4 (5523.10.6)
Build Info: WebBrowser-55231006~1
Code Type: PPC (Native)
Parent Process: launchd 104

Date/Time: 2008-01-25 15:22:50.829 -0800
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B18)
Report Version: 6

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 0

Thread 0 Crashed:

If anyone has some insight, I would appreciate it. A person proposed a fix by deleting a (possibly) corrupt preference file for QuickTime. It is not effective -- just so you do not waste your time suggesting deleting 'com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist'.

I apologize if this is a repeat post -- I am so frustrated that I regrettably did not do a comprehensive search.

Try this:

Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash and installed.

(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)

I appreciate the attention... However, the issue persists. Could JavaScript crash safari? I have troubleshooting it and it seems to stabilize on one of the problem sites -- if I disable JavaScript.

Absolutely. If sporadic then probably poor web coding, or a browser version (e.g. Safari Panther) not able to render more recent code. If wide-spread, then probably requires a reinstall of the OS.

Post a Javascript based URL that is crashing.

I've seen that too, but it's obviously not Apple's problem as the crash is occurring in the Flash plugin, and from my experience it will crash both Safari and Firefox.

Adobe needs to fix their software, plain and simple.

I agree... The specific site that I have isolated crashes on both Safari and Firefox. I suspect it is a JavaScript issue. I know it indicates that it is a macromedia plugin issue -- but I think it is a script instantiating the (Flash) plugin that triggers it {See: The constant crashing.} I cannot make it crash the same way every time however, it will crash the browser every time at some point. Furthermore I think the culprit is a Flash Advert. They {Read: Advert Companies.} use generic and (*sloppy*) code for the flash plugin(s) to launch an instance on so many sites.

I think Adobe needs to take a long (hard) look at the new plugins and begin to work with Apple to resolve these issues...

It is a social networking site: http://www.christianmingle.com

If you try to look at photos, it will crash at some point.

I have this issue with my own web site, on my new Leopard Intel Macbook. Oddly, it didn't happen to me with Tiger on my Powerbook G4, and doesn't affect Windows or Linux. But both Safari and Firefox are affected (Safari more so) in OS X.

My page uses a Flash weather magnet, and I coded up an AJAX JavaScript timer to refresh it for me every so often. Sometimes the browser will last days... sometimes hours. Sometimes it crashes only when I select that tab (and immediately when I select that tab.

I report the issue with Safari to Apple each time it happens, hoping someone will push for a fix if it shows up more.

The last line in my crash backtrace is related to intel CPUs :

I have seen this problem on various sites (not many though) - each time all I get is as follow :

It could be related to flash ads being cloned (via JS) to another place :
in one of the sites the ads are loaded at the bottom of the page (in case of ad server issue / slowness) and then placed in DIV tags by cloning their content from the bottom of the page (not sure I'm clear)

I am also seeing this problem (crashes both Safari and Firefox, seems to happen when the embedded Flash object tries to get going). I have the latest Adobe Flash installed (9,0,115,0) already.

I guess this is just an unsolved Adobe bug. It is not an Intel issue. I am on a PB/G4 in the latest Tiger. This does not seem to be acknowledged as a known bug on Adobe's support web site.

ditto....got this error message (see below) but in FIREFOX. Most of the recent crashes have been happening in FF, but still some in Safari. Most seem to occur when i go to Yahoo. I reset my homepage to google. helps but stumped. also have
uninstalled and reinstalled flashplayer. working better, but still crashing intermitantly.

Tiger + Flash release 115 = Good

Leopard + Flash release 115 = Bad.

Reinstall Flash release 47 and your problems should go away. 10.5.2 install overwrites whatever version of Flash you had installed with release 115...which is a bit of a pain.

Please - if you try this fix - then post your success. Then maybe the powers that be will take notice.

Thanks Roger, i am using Tiger and u are right. as per Sumerset and his response to cyhpherpunk back on 1/25/08 I redid an uninstall of old Flash and installed 115 (i found out i was re-installing an older version--don't ask me how) directly from the adobe sight and crashes on Tiger seem to be history--both in safari and Firefox, though i am knocking on wood and crossing fingers.
here are Sumerset's instructions again for those in need of a flash fix >>

Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash and installed.

(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)<<
