Huge wifi problems with Leopard

I've had my Macbook for a few months and all the problems started when I updated to Leopard, so it is not a hardware issue.
This only happens with my home network, all other networks I have tested works fine. The network works fine with Windows laptops at the time of the OS X wifi downtime. The 10.5.1 update did not fix it, as I expected it to do.
The wifi connection is working for hours in a row, but once in a while it suddenly disconnects. It then tries to reconnect, and it looks like it succeed, but it disconnect again after a few seconds. After that it reconnects once more, but it gets disconnected again. And so on.. The wifi indicator is almost blinking. The internet is sometimes working for a few seconds when it is blinking, so nothing is wrong with the wifi connection itself.
After around 5 minutes with "blinking"; disconnecting and reconnecting, the problems suddenly fixes itself and the wifi is working fine for a couple more hours.
Here is my log. VMWare has nothing to do with it, the problems started way before I installed it.

It may in fact be at least partially hardware related.
It is a fact that Leopard has changed networking - but that does not mean Leopard is solely to blame for router compatibility issues. Some router have flaky firmware - often firmware patches are done to ensure compatibility with one specific OS or hardware device.
Let both Apple and your Router manufacturer know - they can work together to fix the issues. Posting here is no guarantee Apple will be aware of your issue (esp. without details).
I have tried two routers and both work perfectly under Leopard (Airport Extreme - Fast Ethernet & DI-624 from D-Link).
I'd suggest:
1) Verify your router is on it's latest firmware.
It seems that Linksys routers are often listed when people are having wifi-issues.
Let us know the make/model of the router too.
2) You don't mention the type of networking - is it G or N (pre-N actually).
If you have an N router - try setting it to B/G for some stability.
3) If you connect directly to the router (via ethernet) is is faster/more stable?

I installed Leopard on my G4 PowerBook. I am running 8.5.1 using a D-Link DI-514 router and a cable modem. When I connect to the router directly, speed is fast and reliable. When I connect wirelessly, it is slow and unpredictable. The last firmware update for my router happened in 2004 and it is no longer supported by D-Link, so I may just need a new router. I also tried adding the IP addresses of OpenDNS into the DNS window of network properties in the system preferences, but it didn't seem to help. I also tried turning off IPv6 in network preferences and disabling WEP encryption on the router, but neither helped.

Leopard remains on my shelf, unloaded until I feel more confident (or until new updates come through). Here's my question, though. I have a MacBook and Airport Expres.
Am I less likely to encounter wireless connectivity issues with AE or pretty much the same as with some third-party router?

I had similar problems. When I was away from my "home" wireless network I could turn on my laptop and it would automatically open the network (I use Sprint wifi). However at home I could not get on the internet. The problem was resolved when we updated the D-Link we are using. After that I only have to turn on my computer and hit the Safari button and I'm on automatically. Prior to this I had another Mac Laptop with Mac OS X 10.4 (TIGER) but the hard drive burned up so I just bought a new MacBook with Leopard already installed. Hope this info is useful to you.

I have the same router (DI 514) and Leopard 10.5.1 on a new Macbook. The wifi connection is much slower compared to Tiger on a 1.5 yr old Macbook. The new Macbook is definitely much more sensitive to distance/line of sight than the older one (i.e. the wifi transfer speed is only reliable and fast if I'm standing next to the router; whereas I never had speed issues with the older Macbook anywhere in my house). But I haven't taken the time to isolate whether it's Leopard or the newer Macbook.
I also did the exact same troubleshooting steps as tomholli with no improvement.

I gave up and bought an Airport Extreme. This seems to have resolved the issues. It appears that the problem was linked to Leopard and the D-Link DI-514. Since the DI-514 has reached "end-of-life" I am not sure what level of support I could have received from D-Link anyway so this seemed like the best (although expensive) option.

I was having sporadic dropout issues with my Macbook Pro connected to a Linksys wrt54g router. The Linksys was quite a few generations behind on the firmware, so I attempted to upgrade it. Using a wired connection, the upgrade failed.... to the point that the router was not booting.
I bought a $35 Belkin Wireless G at Target. I have not had a drop in connection in 3 days with the Macboo Pro. In the meantime, I have un-bricked the Linksys, but I think I will find another use for it for the time being.

This is an old thread but I wanted to post my findings. I found out that my newer MacBook with the 802.11a/b/g/n card is much more sensitive to 2.4Ghz interference than the older MacBook’s 802.11b/g card. I had a baby monitor operating on 2.4Ghz (analog) that was killing the newer MacBook’s Airport reception. When I turned off the baby monitor, the new MacBook’s wifi performance was fine. It's strange that older Airport card had no problems dealing with the interference.
I ended up buying a 802.11n access point and use it in n-mode only for the new MacBook (older MacBook and wife’s PC still use a g-only access point). The range and performance of 802.11n is incredible (I regularly connect to a NAS for backup and to stream movies and music).

My Powerbook also seems to be more sensitive to the interference, mostly from my 2.4Ghz phone. Pre-10.5.1 my WiFi never dropped. Now I have to reconnect several times a day.

Just had a thought on this. Is vmnet referring to virtual machine? Do we / Did we all have vmware fusion installed?

I can't connect to my wireless accounts. It says in my in my network preferences that AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet. Well.... it's not able to connect. My computer is also telling me that the 802.1x authentication has failed. I'm really not sure what I'm doing here but I would like to be able to use my computer in places other than at my desk connected to the wall... Any Suggestions?

I have the same setup as you, MacBook and Airport Express, worked perfectly until I "upgraded" to 10.5.2. There is no way this is a router problem as my iBook (with 10.4) still works perfectly with the same Aiport express.

I think I have a new twist on this tail.
My MacBook wifi only works in one room in my home, about 10 metres away from my router. And even then, it seems to only work when the router is on Channel 4.
When I place the MacBook in the same room as the router it no longer works, even when I turn all other equipment in that room off that might use radio (a bluetooth router and a MacMini - which incidentally runs Tiger and has no problems).
I don't recall this occurring prior to the upgrade to 10.5.2
As a recent PC switcher, this wifi issue and previous keyboard issues (which was the reason I installed 10.5.2 in the first place) has left me deeply disappointed.
FYI - Billion BIPAC-7500G router (which works fine with everything other than my MacBook)

A comment on Leopard wireless capability -
I have a new Macbook Pro dual-booting with Leopard 10.5.2 and WindowsXP Pro.
i) Windows connects everytime to my G-band, WPA-PSK encrypted, SSID-hidden, Actiontec router (Verizon FiOS standard issue).
ii) Mac won't connect unless SSID is broadcast, and even then it's fussy and requires workarounds.
I don't think the MBP hardware or wireless router is at fault -- definitely seems a weakness with Leopard.
