I'm getting this console error any time I try to do anything in Mail.app (3). Any ideas?
Mail604: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid'

You are not alone... I am having the exact same problem.
One of the usual things to try is to remove the com.apple.mail.plist file and start afresh with new mail settings. I've just tried that, and it did not change anything.
I'm not sure why Mail is trying to access the ToDo's anyway... Aren't they normally part of iCal? Maybe I'll try to remove them from iCal and see if that fixes it...
If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to switch back to Thunderbird, and hope that someone comes up with a fix...

I just had this same problem. I opened iCal and deleted all the todos out of there. Then relaunched Mail.app and seems like i'm in good shape. Looks like it's back to omnifocus for tasks...
Hope it helps!

Same problem here too. Added a few todo-items to iCal this morning and after that Mail startet crashing, not on startup, but whenever I clicked on a mail or note for preview in the Mail.app program.
Deleting the todo-items from iCal fixed it.
Fresh Leopard install on new partition, no old stuff transfered other than my Documents folder.
Got to be a bug.

Same story. Fresh (format) install of Leopard. I have iCal set to automatically sync with .mac which I don't know that others mentioned. If there's no todo's in iCal, Mail works normally. If I add a todo in iCal, mail won't startup with the error:
Application Specific Information:
-MetadataManager getAllCalendarStoreData
-MailboxesOutlineViewStateStorage clearAndResetShouldShowVariables
-
-
- Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid'
Seems to be a problem with syncing todo's either between iCal and Mail on the mac or something's up with the .mac sync

Yup I'm having the same problem as well. Definitely a bug. I do not have a .Mac account but as soon as I added a todo into iCal, every time I click on a message in Mail.app it crashes with the error mentioned here. Remove the todos and the problem goes away. I sent a report to apple, I hope you all have to so they can fix this bug.
I was wondering why I wasn't getting my email reminders either, must be a related problem. Anyhow, it's good to know I'm not crazy.

This is the error I got:
trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid
FWIW I have one email account setup (gmail IMAP) in Mail.app and I have the ToDo's set to be "On My Mac" so they don't try to sync with Gmail.
I just did a "Cut" and then pasted all of my To Dos into Textpad and then tried opening Mail. Now Mail.app works.
Hopefully an update will fix this issue.

I just ran the update to 10.5.1 and it appears to have fixed the problem for me.

I was having this problem too. I was getting a crash every time I tried to open an email message. I also got a crash simply by launching Mail and then quitting. I noticed on the toolbar of the main Mail window that the icon for Note was enabled/clickable but the To Do icon was not. Then I tried the following steps which has resolved the crashing on my laptop (MacBook Pro):
1. Launch Mail.
2. Click on the Note icon in the toolbar of the main Mail window.
3. Click on the To Do icon in the toolbar of the New Note window.
4. Typed "Test" (this was probably not necessary but I was testing).
5. Clicked on the Done icon in the toolbar of the New Note window.
After completing the steps above, the To Do icon in the toolbar of the main window of Mail was available for clicking. I have not had a crash since and I can now open email messages without a crash.
Good luck,
TK

Anyone know if Apple's actually trying to fix this one? I use ToDos pretty extensively, so just deleting them all isn't really an option for me. I have a brand new Mini that this is occuring on.

After running out of luck with the suggestions on this and other forums on the net regarding Mail crashing, I did some digging and found a working solution. The problem definitely has something to do with Mail not being able to manage To Do's correctly (when you launch the app, you'll see that the To Do button is greyed out).
1. Before opening Mail, delete the "com.apple.mail.plist" found in Library>Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (Not sure if this is really necessary but i did it as a precaution)
2. Launch iCal and delete all To Do's.
- IMPORTANT! Deleting the To Do's as suggested in the boards did not work for me. I looked at iCal closer and realized that i deleted only the current To Do's but NOT older To Do's which were archived and therefore hidden from view. (This is why Mail was still crashing)
3. Click on the "To Do Items by Priority" bar in iCal on the right of the calendar and drop it down to "Show All Completed Items". Delete all completed tasks.
4. Launch Mail and enter all your settings and create your account.
5. In the main mail menu, you should see "To Do" highlighted. If not, click on the "Note" icon first, then it should highlight.
6. From there, your mail should open up correctly now.
