An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.

So for Xmas I found an iPod (click wheel 20GB) in my stocking, and have been having issues getting it to work. At first neither the computer nor iTunes would see it. I restored it to factory settings (*sad face* bye bye pre-loaded music) and now have only a slightly different problem. When I connect my iPod to the computer, in "My Computer" it shows up for a second as IPOD (M:), changes to Mass Storage (M:) and then goes away, and while iTunes is running, it comes up with the error message "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly." and asks me to disconnect and reconnect, but no matter how many times I do, I get the same results. The iPod works fine on my b/fs computer though, and I've seen a couple of threads similar to this, but are all for Mac users. Can anyone help, please!?????

Well, I really don't know WHY this worked, but I had my b/f pick up a new data transfer cable on his way home from work today, plugged in the Pod, and it just worked. No more fiddling or futzing or nothing.

Ok, I'm back again, because when I tried to sync, I got an error messege, so I ejected the ipod, plugged it back in, and nothing. Tried every trick, including Restoring it again, and now its back to the same "Could not be identified" error messege.

Bumping this, since it looks like an issue a lot of people have, and no one has found a great solution...

I've seen that site before, but tried everything on it again, just to be sure, and still nothing.

'Nother new update. iPod is working after downgrading to iTunes 7.2, but iTunes seems to not see all of the music that I've tried to import, so now another mess to try and figure out.

An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly.
Thanks, had the same problem removed all of the USB connections except mouse then plugged in my iPhone USB connector and iTunes found my iPhone again. Afterwards I replugged USB connections one by one and found the culprit my USB keyboard.
This all happened after I install a Windows Update that updated my Video Card ATI. Hmmm... thats when all the problems came. Glad to see you guys teaming up and trying to help the rest of us.

I FINALLY solved this. I uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Support and it started working again.
I hope this works for you.

Which version of iTunes were you using? I updated to the latest and deleted out the Mobile Device Support, and I'm still having the same error message.
