No updates, apparently, but a quick search through the threads shows that this not just a macbook issue. The 'audio popping" happens with iMacs, too (like mine) and was NOT a problem until recent Leopard updates.
And it's annoying beyond belief.

You can add me to the list of people with this issue. I just got my new MacBook - Santa Rosa a couple of days ago and I noticed it immediately - random popping through my external speakers .... very annoying!

Well, no help seems to be forthcoming, but an old app Keepsoundawake seems to be helping for me. It plays a "silent sound" every so often that keeps the audio from going to sleep. So far, the "speaker pop" is gone.
It's available on versiontracker, but be advised that the preferencepane can't be used on MacIntel computers.
I really wish there were an easy or clear way to report bugs like this directly to Apple, though.

Hello,
I am developing an application which fixes this problem, and it will be released in the next few days.

Hey, thats great news, keep us posted here.
Since you are developing the app, can you tell us what is the nature of the problem - is it hardware or software related?
My theory is that this is a hardware issue - my friend has a MSI/Win XP laptop and experiences the same audio pops/clicks. Also iMac and Macbook pro users are complaining.

It's a software issue, re-introduced in the 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 patch. It had been intoduced back on 10/4/10 or so and then fixed soon after. I've no idea (apart from apple ignoring the boards since there is no real "bug report" system) why the problem hasn't already been fixed.

Hello,
It is a software issue. I have found a simple way to keep the sound card awake that lasts longer than your computer will, and takes about 5% of the processor and 5MB of RAM.

5% of the processor is a lot for an app that would run in the background 24/7. . . is that 5% constant or only happening occasionally? Kudos to you for developing an app, but hopefully it's an app that people can keep on all the time without worrying about processor cycles.

5% is the most it takes, it usually takes around 3%.

bump!
Haha just kidding...
It's most likely because the sound card goes to sleep when it's not being used, and then wakes up again. This power cycle can cause the pop sound, which is magnified when using external speakers.
I suggest that everyone with loud external speakers go to radio shack and get a ground loop isolator. Even if it doesn't completely fix this issue, it will clean up the audio hiss at high volumes.

Hello,
The fix for the audio pop issue is finished. It is called StopThePop, and can be downloaded here
Edit: And let me say, it is really nice having the pop gone
