Closed lid operations?

I don't have a dock, but I do have an exterior display, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Is there a way to keep working with the lid closed? or do I have to keep it cracked so it doesn't sleep?

I would suggest keeping the lid open about an inch for cooling purposes. Air is drawn in through the keyboard to cool the computer.
These two utilities will prevent the computer from sleeping.
InsomniaX
SleepLess

"Utilities" for keeping the Mac from sleeping??? Uh, hello. All you have to do is go into the Energy Saver settings preferences and choose "Never" for putting the computer to sleep! You can also choose "Never" to keep the display always on. It's a preference setting; no "utility" is needed.

Uh, hello Evangelist, but the OP is talking about running with the lid closed so, uh, hello, that's uh, not a preference setting. Try it - choose never sleep and display always on, then close the lid - it sleeps, right????? Shocking! Helps to read the post before, uh, evangelizing, 'eh? Go shoot some hoops, March Madness is almost here...
And true, MacMedic, the OP could use SleepLess or InsomniaX, but of course those are what people without an external display, keyboard and mouse need to keep their MBPs awake with the lid closed.
So, jsunem, all you really have do to is follow Apple's instructions:

Hope this helps...

Hello, neuro! Thanks so much for your evaluation and interpretation. Mac Medic indicated that he recommended the OP keep his lid open and THEN proceeded to advise that the OP use one of those utilities to keep the computer from sleeping. It was my interpretation that Mac Medic was not giving advice based on a closed lid operation but an open lid operation, hence my reply. I apologize for any inerrant evangelizing that may caused undue distress to your morning.

I'm only distressed by those who claim their evangelizing is unassailably correct - and I wouldn't characterize that as undue.
But I see your point as well, and defense of my sarcasm, I hadn't imbibed any coffee at the time of my earlier post...so - being now sufficiently caffeinated, apologies all around!

Unless Apple has substantially changed the physical architecture of the Pro line, there is absolutely NO communication between the keyboard tray and the rest of the machine, except for a tiny slot to pass the ribbon cable thru, for the simple reason of keeping the portable safe against accidental spills. Hence air cannot be "drawn thru the keyboard". There will be a cooling effect of the air flowing on top, especially over the palmrests, but most of the cooling is done by the air flowing under the computer, or entering the slot behind the lid hinge and exiting the side slots due to the fans. Thus the advantage of using any of the accessories that lift the portable off the desk for better airflow.
Correct me if things have changed recently, but didn't the Pro's keep awake automatically as soon as you plugged in a keyboard, mouse and external display, even if you closed the lid? ("Plugging in" can be physical, or virtual via Bluetooth, btw)

Correcting you. No 'recent change' - this has never been the case. You have always had to let the MBP (and the PB before that) go to sleep and then wake it up with the external keyboard. This is true with both wired and Bluetooth peripherals.

If the MacBook Pro draws air through the keyboard for cooling purposes, why do you get keyboard covers (like iSkin etc available from Apple Store)? Surely use of these items would prevent air flow and cause over heating?
