Do a File --> Save and select application instead of workflow. Tada! You have an automator app.

Is there a way to make automator do this automatically, so that every time i login, and download a .doc.dot this is done automatically (in other words, i dont have to run the workflow manually every time)?
Thanks
There are several options for making this workflow/application run automatically. Each one of these options is a little more involved than simply editing the workflow, so whether or not you choose to do them is up to you.
1. If you save the workflow as an application (or possibly as a workflow, although I haven't investigated this) you can create a small launchd script that checks the "Downloads" (or any other) folder for new arrivals every couple of seconds. If it detects any new downloads, it can run the application to correct the file extensions.
2. You can create a wrapper script for Safari that launches the application in a loop whenever Safari is launched. This might be a little ungainly, but it should work just fine.
The downside is that both of these solutions require a knowledge of scripting and unix commands. Also, both of them have the potential to be resource hogs. If you want to give them a shot and don't know how to create the necessary scripts, send me an email. For me, I'll just stick to clicking on the workflow every time I download a Microsoft Office file.
P.S. As a side note, Microsoft has been made aware of the problem. They imply that its Apple's fault and suggest fixing your permissions. Good luck. http://www.officeformac.com/.ee8b1e6

Thanks for the workflow. I saved it as an app, have it in my downloads folder, and just run it after I download stuff. Works well, thanks a lot.

I uninstalled Office 2008 because of performance issues with 10.5.2 and re-installed Office 2004 However, I'm still getting .dot appended with Safari .doc downloads. Is there a plist or something I should delete to fix this? I deleted the Safari plist and launch services plist with no change. This wasn't an issue in Office 2004 so I'm assuming it's residual from the 2008 install. Thanks.

Just as a followup, this issue appears to be fixed by applying the "Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update".

No, it's not: installing the update doesn't fix the problem.
Disappointing:
Safari 3.1, nor Office 12.01 update change anyghing.
Or am I wrong?

So is one of these two multi-billion dollar multinationals going to fix this problem? I don't have time to figure out what an automator is, let alone program one. Not sure if any Safari wizards are monitoring these forums, but if one is, maybe they can let us know what they are planning to do.

This problem has been solved with the newest Microsoft Office 2008 update (12.0.1) which can be downloaded here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
If you don't feel like installing this update, you can use the automator application mentioned above. To do this download the follow application and after downloading a document, double click it.
http://idisk.mac.com/timfall/Public/Office08%20Files%20Rename.app/?webdav-method=ZIP&disposition=download7468
As a side note, no modification to Safari is need since this is not a problem with Safari, but with the way Microsoft Office 2008 handles file meta data.
Hope this helps.

I'll second CMD-Z's comment that the 12.0.1. update does not fix this issue. (Although the automator app works great!)

12.0.1 was specifically designed to address this issue, although Microsoft managed to kinda screw up the update (imagine that). You may have to install it manually from the website rather than through Microsoft Auto Updater.
If you're still having problems, send me a message and I can take a look at your settings to see if something else is messing you up.

Update 12.0.1 does not solve the issue – see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948057 for list of fixes.

My apologies, I meant to say that 12.0.1 addresses the issue (although not specifically listed in the update) in conjunction with Leopard's UTI handler. For a full explanation of the UTI workaround the update performs, see Microsoft Mac blog discussion forums.

The specific change to Info.plist (at least to Word) can be found on line 678-680. While both .dot and .doc are both still defined as mime-type application/msword, .doc now has the ostype defined as an array of strings with value W8BN. Since the official documentation lists ostype as taking an array, this is the correct UTI value given to downloaded .doc files. I assume a similar change was made for the other Office applications.
I suspect that in modifying the Info.plist file, the update did not properly change this file. Thats just a guess.

You're right –– there is indeed changes to the way it is handled – I see the new "array" part as well on my copy of Word 2008, with a file modified date of 07-Mar-2008 (showing it was indeed updated as part of the 12.0.1 update.
I am not entirely sure why it isn't working for me then –– perhaps (as noted in the Microsoft forums) the bug is partially due to Apple, and Apple hasn't released a corresponding fix for the issue.
I originally suggested editing the Info.plist files (above) but have actually subsequently formatted and reinstalled my computer and installed Office without any modifications to the files, and updated to 12.0.1 – but still experiencing the problems with Safari.
Wonder why it works on some but not others then...
