It's only persistent if someone stays in the room.

If everyone leaves, and then one person comes back, the room is re-created.

I asked our Apple Engineer the same thing.

Specifically, I asked if we could have "Persistent, moderated rooms" and he replied that the room closes when everyone leaves.

Or the server restarts.

This is slightly incorrect. It is entirely possible to create persistent chat rooms - there is just no way to do it using iChat as the client. If you use Adium, do the following:

1. Go to "File > Join Group Chat..."
2. Select your iChat server account (if you are using multiple accounts)
3. Name your chatroom
4. For server, type in conference.(your ichat server url)
5. Press "Join"
6. At the "Create new room" dialog, press the "Configure Room" button
7. Scroll down and click the "Make Room Persistent" option. Feel free to mess with any other settings, although this may affect iChat compatibility.
8. Press OK

iChat server simply uses jabberd as its backend, so it supports most anything that a standard Jabber server supports. Unfortunately, Apple didn't build very good room support into iChat client, and thus you need to use different chat clients to enable this "feature."

You have confirmed what I originally said.

Since Adium is a third-party software, some organizations will not install it (I even have trouble loading Microsoft Office since it is not Apple)

If you are using iChat, either the 10.4 or 10.5 version, persistent/moderated rooms are not available.

The moderated part was what is keeping it from being installed at a student level.

I'm not sure if you intended to be dismissive with your reply or not, but I found hoxii's post rather informative. Especially interesting to me was the fact that the backend (jabberd) does support persistent rooms (maybe moderated too?), so there is at least a chance that Apple could change the iChat client in the future. (Time to go to bugreport.apple.com and file some feature requests...)

@hoxii Thanks for the post. I'll be trying out your solution soon...
