Safari 3.1 in Apple software update?
Posted: Mar 19, 2008 6:46 AM

Why am I suddenly getting Safari in Apple Software Update, instead of just iTunes and Quicktime?

I have no version of Safari installed on any of my Windows Systems and certainly do not appreciate having to uncheck Safari everytime Apple Software Update checks for Updates.

If this is an attempt by Apple to "force feed" us Safari, it is not at all appreciated, as I for one am quite content with Firefox.

I had this appear on my Apple Software Update. I thought the same however I downloaded Safari anyway to test it out. I have had it for about a day and I must admit that it does run quite well under windows XP. I am not saying that it is better than firefox or IE but I can say that it runs smoothly and has loaded all pages correctly thus far.

I would love to hear some opinions from people who run firefox and give us a quick comparison review. I do not run firefox but have heard great things about it.

Actually, I don't have anything against Safari, I just see no need to try it right now. I have used Firefox excluisively at home at at work for over two years now and frankly, anything is better than the various iterations of IE.

My grief is more with the fact that ASU, which I expect to alert me to UPDATES for Apple software that I do have, now tries to push NEW software that I don't want and I for one find that annoying. Today Safari, tomorrow ???

I really do want update alerts for QT and iTunes, but rather not have ASU abused to spamvertise other software in this fashion, especially, since there is already a checkmark next to "Safari 3.1"

Well said. I am quite happy with Firefox myself. However, if I were to want to try Safari on my Windows systems, I would prefer to install it myself, and not have it pushed upon me as an "update", when I don't have it already installed. The name of the program is Apple Software Update, not Apple Software Installer.

Exactly. No word on how to get rid of this?

As said in this topic :

You have the "ignore selected updates" feature in the Tool menu.

On the same note, the program's text reads "Checking for new software..." not "checking for updates," or "checking for new versions of software." Then it displays "Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time." It doesn't read, "doesn't have any new software updates..."

Besides, the title of the software is vague, "Apple Software Update." Who's to say the program isn't intended to simply update you on all new Apple software - select what you do or don't want. The button isn't labeled update, it's labeled install.

That is not good enough. It only works for the current version of the ignored software. The next version of Safari and/or iTunes will trigger the updater again despite having ignored the previous version. That is no good!

What's more, it only ignores it for the current user. If as a system admin I ignore the update, the user will still be notified about it when they login. That's also no good!

Disabling Apple Software update is not an option, either. I want users to be notified of security updates for Quicktime and, if they install it, iTunes.

If I rely on the built-in quicktime updater, my users will be shown a link to download iTunes+Quicktime by default. This is still no good! And even if they correctly choose the Quicktime only link, they will get Apple Software Update which will very soon offer updates for software they have not installed. It is an endless cycle of opting out over and over again.

My Windows users don't know what Safari is, don't know they don't have it, and don't know they do not need or want to install it's "update". They just accept the defaults. This is what I expect them to do.

This is simply unethical behavior by Apple to have the security updater install NEW software. A user should have to opt-in to install NEW software instead of being tricked into thinking it's an update they need for something they already have.

Granted, Apple isn't the only one doing this. SUN tries to jam google toolbar down users' throats using their JAVA automatic updater. You have to opt-out EVERY TIME!

I must insist on an opt-in default rather than an opt-out default; especially on software updates. The only way to do this with apple software is to not opt-in to Quicktime to begin with. So I will be removing it from my system images from now on. I'll let my users opt-in to Apple's harassment if they want to.

this was expected so is nothing new here is a article.

Back in January, the Mozilla folks hinted that they expected Apple to deliver a version of its Safari Web browser for Windows.

They were dead-on.

At the opening keynote at Apple’s WorldWide Developers Conference in San Francisco on June 10, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that Apple is porting Safari to Windows XP and Windows Vista. Jobs is touting the Safari 3 beta as being the “fastest browser for Windows.”

A beta version of Safari 3 for XP and Vista is available for download as of today as a free download from Apple’s Web site.

Testers of the “Leopard” version of OS X, the full-featured beta version of which Apple is distributing at the WWDC conference to paid developers attending the event only, also includes the integrated version of the Safari 3 beta.

Apple is looking for ways to grow its browser market share, which Jobs said currently is at about 5 percent. (Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has 78 percent of the market, and Firefox another 15 percent, according to the stats Jobs used during his Keynote.”

Jobs said that Apple plans to use iTunes as a distribution vehicle for Safari for Windows. He noted that there are a million downloads of iTunes a day, with 500 million of those going to Windows machines.

“We know how to reach these (Windows) customers,” Jobs said.

If Microsoft made IE8 for Mac and it started appearing in updates for Microsoft Office for Mac every Mac user would yell "OMG EVIL MIKKKRO$OFT", but it's perfectly acceptable for Apple to do this. As I said in some other thread you copy/pasted that post Aopen, even if the user installs it, that doesn't mean they'll use it. Also, the bug(s) preventing 3.1 to even start on a lot of computers won't be a good experience to Windows users getting another piece of Apple software.

My thoughts exactly 'impala_sc',

I'm a sys-admin for several small businesses, and this situation is intolerable.

I first noticed this behaviour on systems with only Quicktime installed, and which automatically offered only the QT + iTunes as an update. Now a whole new browser is likely to be installed by hapless users, and then I have to clean up the mess.

As a result I've been forced to UNINSTALL APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATER as the only way to keep control of MY computers (NOT Apples), and will now have to install updates manually until Apple sees this as a grave breach of trust, and either stops doing it, or provides administrative tools to control this behaviour.

How do you like them apples, Apple?

Here's what I just did. I uninstalled the Apple Software updater. I don't mond using updaters for convenience....but when companies start invading my computer -- out they go. Apple has built a pretty good reputation of trust. Now they are losing that trust by doing the same things Microsoft was doing. It is almost as if the tables are turning.

So again....just uninstall the updater -- and you'll have to check for updates yourself!

Agree. I would have downloaded Safari just to test it on Windows, but now I feel like if I do I am letting Apple get away with a harmful behavior. I have tried hard to teach others to watch what the likes of AIM and others want to install when they update. Apple had at least been one in the past that I did not have to worry about, until now it appears.
