Took my defective iPod to the store where I bought it this week (Boulanger in Marbella, Spain) and told them about my problems. They said they couldn't help me, and that I had to go to the Apple store in Malaga, and that I would get a replacement in 1 week.
Once at the Apple store I explained my problems to an employee of the store. He treated me like an absolute idiot. He told me to reset the iPod and that would solve the problem. I told him that I had tried that 10000 times and that resetting it would not resolve the problem. He told me to leave the iPod at the store and that they would test it and reset it if necessary. I told him to test it for at least 2 hours, to make sure the problem was really solved. 2 days later the store called me and said I could go and pick up my iPod. I asked them what they did to fix the problem and he said he had reset it. He also told me I had to pay 15 euro for the "repair", and that while the iPod is still in waranty. And, of course, the problem is still not solved. What kind of customer service is this ???? I am going to file a complaint against the store, and try to sell the iPod.
Luckily for me I bought an 80GB Zune last month, which works absolutely perfectly. I will never ever buy another Apple product for the rest of my life.
Thanks a lot Apple !

The sad thing about this problem is that Apple knows that they have a major problem and they are not doing anything because they can't due to the features that are promised to the customer like cover-flow. These features are using too much of the CPU, and hard drive causing the issue. This was according to the apple tech support agent at my local apple store that couldn't due anything for me. Apple should just allow you to be able to turn features off and that should fix the problem.

I experienced this problem with my iPod Classic 160gb when I first purchased it. I noticed it only occurred when I had the volume set to it's max level. Out of curiosity, I went to "settings" in the iPod menu and selected "volume limit." I set it to the recommended level. The pauses and gaps stopped happening.
Perhaps there is a weird connection? All I know is it worked for me. I hope this helps!

Same problem, I got it listed on TUAW.com too. Its not a version problem, its not a max volume problem. It seems to me like the new software on these new iPods is somehow filling up the cache or not updating it when playing Apple Lossless though. Its annoying as ****. I think I'm going to try and return mine next week, this is unacceptable.

I've recently bought my 160 GB classic. Was very happy about it at first. Then I found out that iTunes lost every 3-5 seconds of every last track on each CD when ripping to MP3. I found out after ripping 170 CDs, so was furious. Ripped at 320 Kbs. However, iPod itself worked marvelous. I then decided to rip all CDs with Apple lossless, since here the ripping issue did not occur... Since then I have these 2-3 second pauses. To me it looks like the iPod cannot deal with the large files. The FAT32 format doesn't help either to speed up things. Probably files are scattered (if that's the correct english??) all over the disk, you can cleary hear the disk spinning before the sound returns.. I always thought that Apple was this great company where quality and simplicity ruled... However, they haven't fixed the ripping issue in iTunes yet, although known since the release and despite lots of angry users. Now it seems that i cannot listen peacefully to my apple lossless music on the classic 160 GB either. And since it is imho a hardware problem (not enough resources) it won't be solved either. Paid lots of money for this thing, and Apple should ask themselves what they are doing at the moment... Cause this ain't good...

I have been using teh new update 1.1.2 since the release date, and hoped it would fix this.. but it wasn't. That same Friday it was released I had around 3 or 4 pauses, and have had several ones during the whole week.
I believe it is a memory problem, when the iPod runs out of buffer and the disc is not fast enough to catch up. i wouldn't mind shorter battery performance or a less pretty GUI. The iPod Video never did this.

My{1 month old) 80 g classic just went threw very similar issues,& unfortunately i could not fix it my self. the issues just escalated from there, full out freezing ,rainbow colored display, frequent skipping,I thought there was a degradation with the sound.Hmm then it froze my cpu, would eject rite after clicking sync .Did a little research, uninstalled iTunes, right clicked my cpu/manage/services/stopped ipod service, reinstalled iTunes, then all i had was a virgin ipod again, then itunes was giving me a the disk cannot be read or written to message when i sync'd,and the alloted hard disk sector was erratically increasing then decreasing,i figured id try syncing my library in smaller 3000ish portions and bingo got sum tracks, was able to sync 10000 tracks to it,a day later! I went to the gym today and more darn skippage,i immediately took it back, bent over the manager and got me a new one! now I'm scared to take it out of the box...Ive done alot of bad things to get my ipod! APPLE please don't make make me dew sum dirt to get a CREATIVE device...?

I've had my 160GB classic since January, and the pausing is getting worse. I've restored several times with no difference.
Apple, get off your *** and fix this!!!!!!
