Safari 3.1 broke shockwave-flash???
Posted: Mar 22, 2008 9:00 PM

Since upgrading to Safari 3.1, I kept getting "Safari cannot find the Internet plug-in" message.
It said "xxx has content of MIME type application/x-shockwave-flash. Because you don't have
a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can't be displayed."

I have installed the lastest adobe flash (version 9.0) but no luck. Anyone knows what's the
deal is? It is really annoying!

Depending on what is being embedded into the web page and what it was created with then I would say that you need to download and install the most recent version of Shockwave which is also available at Adobe. Even though Flash will play some of them embedding that will play with Shockwave, others that are made with Director.. ( expensive ) will not play because of differences in the files. So in order to actually play tis content you must install the Shockwave plugin as well.

Tried that already but no luck. I didn't have that problem with 3.0.3 so this is very
disappointing.

I have been having similar issue on Windows Live with Firefox 3 beta 4..

One more thing that can happen is that someone has tried to embed the wrong way, using the wrong kind of file or the incorrect code.. Like trying to play an FLV encoded movie without using a SWF file as an application to put that movie in... While it may work for them it may not work for others who have the actual plugin designed to play the content...

Have you checked the Help menu's Installed Plug-ins to see if the Flash Player is actually seen by Safari? Also, check that Enable plug-ins is checked in Safari's Preference Security settings.

My issue is similar or same. Safari and FireFox are both installed on my system. After installing Safari, I installed the latest Flash plugin from adobe's site. Flash works fine in FireFox. Will not work in Safari. Does not/will not show up as an installed plugin in Safari. My OS is Vista. Without this plugin, Safari (while I like it) is relatively worthless.

Inside the Safari folder in your Programs folder is a folder named Plugins. The Flash installer doesn't know about Safari yet and so doesn't place the Flash Player code in this location like it does for older browsers. You can test this by examining the log in the installer's Show Details function.

Safari tries to find and use plugins installed for other browsers, but can't always do so. In such cases, you can manually copy the Flash Player files over to Safari's plugins folder and relaunch Safari.

You need to copy the following:

NPSWF32.dll
flashplayer.xpt
NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe

Check Safari's Installed Plug-ins under the Help menu to see which plug-ins Safari is able to find.

Hope this helps.

That worked - thanks. FYI for anyone else who might have this issue - the flash files are (or might be) in:

\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

One additional note - the flash plugin is not installed in any other browser plugin folder. It seems that the browser should be responsible for checking the registry for the proper location. My guess is Safari does not do that check.

Um...I Don't know where any of these folders are located so I can't get to them. And When you copy them where do you put it?

If your Safari can't find the Flash Player plug-in after installing the latest version, go to Firefox's plugins folder and copy the following files to Safari's plugins folder:

NPSWF32.dll
flashplayer.xpt
NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe

Alternately, you might find them in:
\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

There appears to be some variation in install location, probably dependent upon which version Flash Player you have installed in the past -- my WinXP has the central location in the system32 location, but my Vista machine has it in Firefox's local plugins folder - go figure...

Hope this helps...

As a general comment on plugins in Safari 3.1, I was quite surprised to find many duplicate items in my Safari | Help | Installed Plugins list. This list is populated by a javascript program that seems to find everything on my machine, wherever it resides: there are plugin folders for Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird, and Opera and all of these seem to be referenced by Safari. Safari lists, for example, 12 different RealPlayer plugins, getting a copy of each plugin from each of the three browsers as well as from Thunderbird (an e-mail client for those unaware of it). I have not tested to see if any of these even work.

Have a look if your version of the player is right:

1 http://www.adobe.com/support/shockwave/
2 http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

Follow the instructions on the Adobe site. Make sure the latest release of your browser is installed on your system. Resources and topics you can find here. Firefox released a new version yesterday if I'm correct.
