Proactive Fix for a PHD unable to sync error
Posted: Mar 27, 2008 8:22 PM

Hello all -

I've been struggling with getting my new laptop with PHD to sync properly. Synchronization worked initially (under 10.5.1, I believe), but started failing 10 days ago. I was reliably getting the following types of messages in the ~/Library/Logs/FileSyncAgent/FileSyncAgent-verbose.log file:

1:: 10048 Remote peer greeting string: 'com.apple.FileSync-1.0.4 FileSyncAgent-277.1 r? OKAY pid=44676'
1:: 10048 okayBusy = 'OKAY'

The key words that got me thinking were "bunzip2FILEToPath" and "BZ2_bzRead (Unexpected EOF)." After poking around on this for a few days, I was able to "reset" the synchronization data on both the laptop and the server by renaming (removing also works) the ~/.FileSync directory like so:

# mv ~/.FileSync/ ~/dot-FileSync

On the next sync action, the ~/.FileSync directories are reset and the user's file system on the laptop and the server are re-scanned and synchronized.

The reference to bunzip2 seems bogus, however, as the file in the .FileSync directory reports that it is an SQLite database file. bunzip2 -t on the file did report that it was OK, so perhaps it's a compressed SQL file - who knows....

My apologies if this was covered somewhere else in this forum. If not, I hope that this can be utilized by others that run into similar problems.
