After a two hour conversation with applecare I had this issue accelerated to the "engineers". They were able to duplicate it on another machine, and I received a call back two days later from the applecare rep saying they believe it is an Nvidia driver issue, with no eta or possibility of a fix.

Any recent news regarding this subject? I just got one of the brand new Penryn based MBPs two weeks ago and I'm experiencing the same problems. Any idea if this is a problem affecting all Macbook pros or just a select few?

This sounds reasonable to me. I no longer seem to experience this issue any longer. Very strange but i thought it had to be driver related.

This might be a clue -- I've been using Firefox since I got my 15" penryn MBP 3 weeks ago, and I've never had the scrolling text problem, but I am having the white flickering boxes in several different scenarios: occasionally when watching videos on the internet (first noticed watching iPhoto tutorials on Apple's site!); occasionally with online flash menus; occasionally when scrubbing through events in iPhoto; always when using the cursor to select multiple photos in iPhoto (i.e., when I move the cursor, I get flickering white boxes over the images I'm selecting). I'll just add this to the laundry list of problems and glitches I've been having since I got this thing: freezing on restart, iMovie & iPhoto crashing, login screen graphics scrambling. Wish I could return/exchange this thing, but of course I ordered the 250GB hard drive, so no luck. If anyone stumbles onto an answer, let us know. I'm going in to talk to a "mac genius" next week, will post back if I get any answers.

I feel for you, and my story is virtually identical to yours, although I guess I bought mine 2 mo. early and got a lower bus speed and no multi-touch for more money. I feel completely ripped off, this is not the ultra-stable workhorse I expected and paid a premium for.

Same problem here - bought refurb MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago. I have noticed it happens in Safari and mail, but not in Firefox. Never happened on my MacBook. Doesn't happen when hooked to an external 20" Dell Monitor.

I have the same problem... However, I seem to have found the cause: a changing desktop background. For me, with this enabled I get progress bars flickering, distorted text in Safari and other apps, flickering Quicktime movies etc.

Also when moving windows or moving the mouse over the dock whilst a desktop picture transition occurs, the framerate drops to 4-5fps.

As soon as I disable the "Change Picture" option in Desktop and Screensaver, the problem went away.
I have the fully patched 9C7010 10.5.2 OS.

I have never had that option enabled. I think this might be a similar but separate bug you have encountered.

what it would show is that when the processor is running high that may be causing the issue. those that noticed the scrolling issue may be able to confirm/deny this

High processor usage/GPU usage may well be the cause, I'll test it when I can.

I have the same issue, but only when I am running on the battery. The text doubles up on itself and images get distorted as well. If I select the text and drag along the column, it fixes itself. When I plug the laptop in, I don't have this issue. I had put new RAM in, not from Apple, and was afraid it was a RAM issue, but it is not.

that may be due to the processor slowing down on battery power, it rarely will affect things that you notice except games and high processor usage programs though but it is a possibility.

Yes! Finally! Some more people with my problem!

My Mbp is showing flashing white boxes while scrolling and moving of the windows. Also it flickers during videos play.
Even the icons of Safari flash. I made a video of the problem:

Hi,

Let me start off by saying that I own a white Macbook 2.4 and I'm currently experiencing the Quicktime flicker problem. But I stumbled upon this forum topic about text corruption and I wanted to share my experience.

I have only experienced this type of text corruption when viewing PDF documents in my Safari browser while using Adobe Readers Safari plugin. If I disable the Adobe Readers plug in from Safari, the problem goes away. I have included screenshots,

This is me viewing a pdf file in Safari WITHOUT the Adobe Readers plugin:

And this is the same PDF in Safari WITH the Adobe Read plugin:

I should add that while using the Adobe's plugin, the scrolling error occurs while using both the trackpad and Mighty Mouse.

PS: This is the plugin I'm referring to:
