Hello,

Anytime i have my MBP off of the power source cable, i can only use it anywhere between 2 and 10 minutes. The Mac then instantly shuts off, without warning, and i lose anything i was working on.

I have no idea what the problem is. When i turn the Mac over, the battery power meter says its full. Ive ruled out a 'heating' issue, because it's not on long enough to get that hot, plus i use a chill-pad. I've disconnected the external hard drive, unplugged the audio cable, and unplugged my other monitor from the MBP port, and anything thats connected via USB. Still no change.

It's very inconvenient, i cannot take my MBP anywhere, i can only use it on the charger, so any help with this would be much appreciated.

Some Specs:

MacBook Pro
OSX Tiger 10.4 (i believe)
1.5 GB RAM (Originally came as 1GB total, i removed an orig 512MB and added 1GB)
80GB Hard-Drive

In the Energy Saver are there any boxes clicked that could do this?

I'll search somewhere.

Unlikely. A system shut down controled by Energy Saver should automatically run the shutdown scripts and ask to quit applications allowing you to save data before shutting down the machine. It will even stop a shut down from happening if you decide not to quit an application.

This sounds more like a power manager or unseated RAM issue, or RAM that is not to spec causing problems. If the machine is under AppleCare (under a year old or purchased) and you still have the original RAM, try putting back in the original RAM to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't make a difference and you are under AppleCare, run the hardware test that shipped with the machine:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081

If you are not under AppleCare, check if one of the exchange programs applies to you:

http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/

If you can't get the original RAM see if the vendor you bought the RAM from is able to follow specs to replace the RAM in question:

http://support.apple.com/specs/

If not, check the vendors listed on my FAQ to replace the RAM you replaced*:

http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html

Check that your firmware is up to date:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303880

If out of AppleCare, replaced with known RAM to spec issues persist, and no exchange program exists, and your firmware is up to date, see if one of these technicians will charge less than Apple for a hardware repair of the power manager:

http://www.powerbookresq.com/
http://www.microdocusa.com/

Good luck!

i checked. all is normal there. i thought that might have been it too, but the fashion & timing in which the computer shuts off is very erratic.

something i should've mentioned before, also, the computer doesn't actually SHUT DOWN, or go to SLEEP at all, it just shuts off entirely, in less than a second. black screen. no power.

thanks for your response though, i appreciate it. if you have any other ideas feel free to let me know.

socialpadre,

Brody has a good suggestion. You may have bad ram. Just put the old ram back in and see if the problem goes away.

Heat can cause the intel processor to just shut down to protect it from further damage. Do you notice your computer getting hot to the touch, underneath the laptop or on the small area just in front of the function keys? I use a program called smcFanControl which monitors my systems heat and fans. It tells me at any given time how hot the computer is. If the CPU gets up to about 160F the internal fans are supposed to kick in to reduced the CPU temperature. If the fans aren't working it's possible the CPU could get very hot and then shut down the computer without warning.

Did you ever find an answer to this problem? I am having the same issues and can't figure out what's going on. Thanks.

hello,

sorry for the delay, i wasnt available.

anywho, no i haven't found the problem yet..

last week i reformatted my computer (i'd wanted to do this anyway)

then yesterday i ran both of the hardware tests off of the start-up disc that came with my MBP, and it came up showing "No Problems"

so i'm confused.

I have Apple Care, and i'll more than likely be calling them very soon unless i can find something quickly that works.

thanks.

My MacBookPro started having a similar issues recently, it just shuts down. However I have also noticed that this only occurs during a heavy CPU load. I'm thinking it is heat related. Have you noticed anything similar?

I had the exact same problem. I tried various cures based on suggestions posted on the web. Nothing worked. I finally took my MacBook Pro into an Apple Store. They replaced the battery. The problem has disappeared. I was surprised it was the battery because all indications were that the battery had plenty of reserve when the MacBook Pro shut off with no warning. Nevertheless, this seems to have fixed the problem.

Just a question but which power supply are you using for your MacBook Pro? Apple has two, a 60W and an 85W power supply. Both will work perfectly and not cause harm to your MacBook Pro. The Pro ships with the 85W and it is recommended that you use the 85W because if you use the 60W, it will power the computer enough to run it but does not have enough reserve power to charge the battery while you are working on your computer. The only way to successfully charge a MacBook Pro with a 60W power supply is to charge it with the computer asleep or shutdown.

So, if you are using a 60W power supply to charge your computer while its up it might be causing it to do some weird things...like shut down randomly. Just an idea...

Hi,

If you haven't tried this... try reseting the PMU. (Power Management Unit).
Go here for instructions: Reset PMU MacBookPro
