Fix for 5 GHz wide channel ON drop outs on AEBS!!
Posted: Apr 6, 2008 11:27 AM

change the channel from automatic (36) to 161... haven't tried others.

open the airPort Utility app

click on the base station
got to manual set up > wireless tab

radio mode: 802.11n (5GHz)
IMPORTANT! Channel: press Option while Clicking on the Channel combo box and choose 161... found out from the instruction manual that this option + click gives extra options... also extra options for radio mode as well... non- n options
wireless options: wide channels ON
press update

may have to restart you Apple TV... press and hold "menu" and "-"/down button... wait a bit and from the menu press "restart"

and no more dropout with 5GHz wide channels on!!!

Didn't work for me, I tried both wide channels on and off and my ATV still locks up on streaming.

not sure you are having the same problem... if you are having streaming problems this is likely do to interference... when wide channels is turned off people it solves the issue... do you have an Airport Base Station.. it's an AirPort Base Station Problem as far as i know other wireless router don't seem to be effected.

this is a different issue that people including myself were having... cause the AppleTV to drop the connecting altogether.. within 2-3 min.. of startup and it doesn't come back i.e. connection gone.. requiring a restart of AppleTV to bring it back.. i.e. not a streaming problem... if you actually get streaming at all with 5GHz wide channels you don't have this problem... you likely have an interference problem.

Ok - just to make sure Apple hears about every one of us having the problem. I never had any issues with my wireless connection prior to the 2.01 upgrade but now streaming from my Mac to the AppleTV using the Airtunes function doesn't work for more than 5-10min before the network connection is dropped.

Configuration:
  • AEBS running a N only 5GHz network and using Wide Channels - latest software & firmware
  • AppleTV with 2.01 software
  • iMac used for streaming

I'm not planning to switch 2.4Ghz or stop using wide channels (I already have a 2.4Ghz G network thank you :) )- so please Apple we need a patch!

Kind regards

did you actually read the post?

you can use 5 GHz AND wide channels and not get ANY dropouts by changning the channel from automatic (36) to to 161 no more dropouts...

i'll repeat... 5GHz with wide channels ON works if you change the channel from automatic (36) to 161... i.e. exactly what you want... i.e. you don't have to wait for a fix, you can use it today in the configuration you want.

Yes I did :)

It wasn't working when I tried this morning - so I've turned off everything - re-started and I'm testing again now.

PS: I think the channels are different in Europe since I've only got 36, 40, 44 and 48 in my drop-down menu. Trying with 36 now (but not the automatic option).

someone else indicated that probably anything over 40 would work.. but if haven't tried anything other than 161... if it ain't broke.. don't fix it attitude?

OK - so when using channel 36 it lost the connection after around 36 mins of streaming audio. When using channel 40 it's streamed for over three hours without any issues.

Really strange... I can't see what's different between 36 and 40 (btw - I've checked and I've got no close neighbors using 5GHz Wireless N)

Thanks for your help! I hope this will get properly fixed soon by Apple.

Mine has been dropping the connection like mad the last few days.

I'm giving channel 161 a shot.
I'd never have guessed about the option click changing the menu.
Way to make things opaque, Apple.

Meh, the Apple TV just dropped the connection with the base station set to channel 161 with wide channels ON.

Okay, now I'm trying channel 36 (automatic) with wide channels OFF.

This has been reported to Apple as a bug, right?

tmartine - thank you for your post on fixing the Apple Extreme Base Station to channel 161... however, I did everything you mentioned and I still have Apple TV dropping it's connection (not as often, but still doing it).

It's sad to think I'm probably going to have to uncheck "Use Wide Channels" and now risk my performance to be under 200 for the rate...

Cynops,

Did this fix it? I'm having the same issue as you... I did use Channel 161 and my Apple TV still drops every once in a while... so maybe I just need to try Channel 40, like others have suggested.

If that doesn't work, then I am just going to turn "Wide Channels" off... which will make my performance less, but until Apple gets this sh*t together, it's going to take just that.

Those that can set their AEBS to channel 161 must have a US version AEBS. I purchased min in Europe and the highest I can go is to 48 (I think. I do not have the AEBS with me at the moment). So the "161 solution" would not work for anyone outside of the US. The fact remains, Apple sold a partially functioning product but received complete payment. This is not fair, and becoming more and more typical of Apple's behavior.

I am beginning to think differntly about Apple.

Yea Baby!
I tried it and it works. My Apple TV now Sync's a complete movie in less that 10 minutes with no drop outs.
It also worked with Wide Channel disabled and Automatic channel but very very very Slowly.
