Another chime in about this issue. For me it is intermittent. And seems to happen with I move the laptop too fast after closing the lid. It may happen at other times but that is when I notice it the most.

the only way that i was able to fix this issue is to re-install leopard and skip the graphics update. lame.
i certainly will NOT allow software update to just install things on my system any longer after this fiasco. i'll let you guys beta test for me and apple.

For me, if I simply press the power button, as opposed to holding it down, then wait a few moments then the computer seems to snap out of it and I'll see the shutdown menu on my screen.
I simply press cancel and move on. Luckily, I haven't had this problem happen in about a month.

Hilarious! This is what I've always done as a long-time Windoze user. NO to automatic updates. Didn't think I'd have to take the same precaution with an apple computer.
Really hope they fix this soon. This is my first mac, and I don't want it to be my last, but this is a huge bug, IMO.

I'm fixed!
MacBook Pro Firmware Updater 1.5 and Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Updater 1.0 did the trick. I don't know which one, but I don't even care.
Anyone else gotten paste this bug with the firmware update?

I did the firmware updates and my problem remains as bad as it's ever been. I had high hopes. But, alas, nothing. This is SO frustrating.

I have this problem on occasion. But usually if I wait (sometimes up to a minute) the display returns. There have been times where I have been impatient and just killed the machine by holding down the power button.
Just a thought, but it may have to do with how much RAM you have. When you put your computer to sleep, I believe the Mac's do a hybrid hibernation; in other words it transfers information from the RAM to the Hard drive for non-volatile storage. When you wake the computer back up, it has to move all that information back to RAM. That could take time, before it shows the log in window/desktop.
Just my input. I hope it's accurate.

I'm still placing bets that the problem exists in the graphics drivers, not any firmware.

I'm only starting to have this exact same issue: computer is sleeping, then when I open the lid, it boots up, but the screen doesn't turn on.
It's only been happening for about a week, so since the last update..... No fix yet, eh?
Argh.

The firmware update 1.5.1 did nothing to improve the wake from sleep issue on my MBP, I'm hoping 10.5.3 has a graphics driver fix included to address this.

Not that this will fix the problem, but this has been happening to me. I push the power button, which brings up the RESTART SLEEP CANCEL SHUT DOWN option window. By just pushing RETURN, it will shut down properly without a HARD shutdown (Not that can see any of this on the screen, but trust that it is happening).

Thanks Angela!
That suggestion worked great for me.
I'm now very happy that I can close my Macbook Pro and use an external monitor.
