MBP display is washed out blue, until I open display prefs

My MacBook Pro is just a few days old, but I've noticed a strange problem. On startup, the display is washed out, with a blue tint. But as soon as I open System preferences and click on Display prefs, it snaps back into its proper rich color.
I don't have to adjust anything, it just changes automatically. But it's a pain to have to keep opening system prefs just to get the screen to look right.
The washed out color is easy to notice, because I have the MBP hooked up to an external 20" cinema display, which looks normal.
Is this a hardware or a software problem? Should I take it back to the Apple Store?

I'm experiencing the same issue. I'm not sure it happens when I boot... but it does every once in a while coming out of sleep/screen saver.
From reading other posts, it sounds like it's an issue when plugged into an additional monitor... as mine is.

Yeah, I have had the same problem for the last couple of weeks, but only intermittently. It happens when some times when I wake the computer up from sleeping. I'm not using an external monitor so I'm not sure what the deal is. I have noticed though, that whenever I open up the display pane in preferences that it gets reset. I'm wondering if there might be some preference file that might need to be deleted. I wouldn't be sure which one though.

Try resetting the PRAM (which stores the display settings, among other things):

Same problem here..... PRAM reset did not work.....but setting up a new calibration did..... I found I had to make major adjustments there. doesn't seem like I should have to do that though. I'll keep looking for other solutions.

I have an external display attached and have set my MBP to never sleep when used with the AC adapter but do have the screen saver activated. Occasionally when I wake the display up one of the displays (the attached or the MBP display) will display washed out colors. I have made icc profiles for both displays and believe that software doesn't find my icc profile upon wakeup. To rectify I go to a display sleep hot corner to switch the displays on and off..... that usually brings everything back to normal. Kind of a hassel.... have sent feedback to Apple with no response.

I get this on my non primary account when returning to my computer after the screensaver was active (with password).
I believe this isn't specific to MBP. I had this same issue on my old powerbook G4 except that it was when I was switching users.
The issue I believe is related to having a custom colorsync profile. Pre-leopard the bug would not get fixed by opening Displays preference, but required the running of /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DMProxy which fixed the screen.

I have a first generation MacBook Pro and have always had this problem. So this issue has been around for quite a few versions of OS X 10.4. I haven't really paid attention to see if the problem went away after switching to 10.5 on my system

Exactly the same here. Happened quite regularly over the last few weeks, so I guess it's a software problem that was brought on by some recent update, or even the firmware update .. ?
Also, sometimes the screen refuses to respond to the brightness control if fully dimmed (if related..).
Will OS X 10.5.3 fix it? ..........

Yes, this has been happening for a few years. Seriously.
I found it generally happens more (only?) if you're using a profile calibrated with an app other than the built-in Calibration system...
