For those that are having this problem...

Are you also having the problem after applying the Office 2008 12.1 update whereby you can't double-click open files that you received as e-mail attachments?

Files made/saved on the Mac open fine -- but something you received as an attachment will no longer be double-click openable?

Files received as email attachments open just fine. They also don't suffer from the extra extension problem.

Even weirder.. I have uninstalled Office using Microsoft's uninstaller, and .doc files are still named .doc.dot by Safari. Considering that there's no application available to open them something must have stuck. Any ideas where this information is saved?

I can confirm that 12.1 does not solve the problem.

It just shows how Microsoft don't care about customers if they're unwilling to solve this problem. Also, it might like - one of the many - marketing scams to make people not use Mac OS X but return to Windows. It's speculated that's why they're not releasing OneNote for Mac, to get students to buy PC's instead - since Macs are now more popular there. They also saw opportunity in the One Laptop Per Child scheme, so instead of Linux - kids in the developing world will be stuck with Windows. Blah.

i removed office 08 using said uninstaller and i still also get the .dot .pot etc filenames at the end of my files downloaded with safari.

this tells me that it may be an issue with safari?

I can double-click the downloaded .doc.dot files, and they open just fine.

I edited the plist as per the instructions in the beginning of this thread, and then ran Onyx to clear the caches, but it's still not working.

Here's a screen shot of my Word 2008 Info.plist:

Greetings!

I have got around this problem. I have my iMac that had Office 2004 on it and I upgrade to 2008. Safari on my iMac did not save the .doc as .dot, it work fine.

When I got my MacBook Air I installed Office 2008 on it right away. I did suffer the .doc to .dot Safari problem, even after the 12.0.1 and 12.1.0 rollouts.

I did play with the fixed listed in this thread, but didn't want mess office up too much. I also knew that my iMac was working fine with out any fixes. I wanted to play that on my MacBook Air.

I use my MacBook Air the most of papers and Online College stuff and really need it to work properly with the browser and Office.

So...

I remove Office from my MB Air (trashing the Office 2008 Apps Folder and the /user/Lib../Peref.../micorsoft.office.pfile file.. ) and reboot.

I reinstalled my Office 2004 (no patching)
Clear my Trash

Started my reinstall of my Office 2008, (rebooted), Patched with SP1 (12.1.0) and Reboot.

Launched Work 2008 (slow starting from the install), Closed it.

Launched Safari and downloaded a Word Document from my College site with out any problems.

That is my "Microsoft fix".... =)

Something left behind from 2004 for 2008 to deal with.

LOL .... 2004-2008... four year term.

Respectfully,

Jesse from Korea

I finally got a working solution for this. first of all update to the latest verion of office.

then:

copy and paste this command to the teminal application and hit enter:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

That should Rebuild the launchservices database and fix the problem. at least did it for me.

You can also rebuild launch services using Onyx. However, when I've done this the problem returns after running Word once and rebooting. Let us know if your command line solution is more permanent.

ok so cardsdoc was righ mt method didnt survived the reboot but here is a complete solution to the problem:

firs of all do this which is posted in a previous message.

This should fix the problem with .doc.dot
______________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Go to the Office folder in the Applications folder in the Finder
2. Right (or ctrl) click Word and "Show Package Contents"
3. Open "Contents" and "Info.plist"
4. It should open in Property List Editor
5. Click the arrow next to "Root"
6. Scroll down and click the arrow next to "UTExportedTypeDeclarations"
7. Scroll down and click the arrow next to number "2"
8. Click the arrow next to "UTTypeTagSpecification"
9. Select the row "public.mime-type"
10. Hit "Delete"
11. Save and close
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

You can fix the problem for PowerPoint and Excel too. Same steps as above except:
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
...
2. Right click on PowerPoint or Excel
...
7. This is the part that is a little tricky, search the number in which there is the extension that powerpoint or excel is converting the files to .pot .xlt etc.. this is speciefed next to UTTypeIdentifier.
...

_____________________________________________________________________________

THEN
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

copy and paste this command to the teminal application and hit enter:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

________________________________________________________________________________________________

this method survived the reboot the only problem for me was that after i did this for the first time .ppt stoped to be .ppt.pot indeed but it became .ppt.pps so i just repeated from the step 7 but this time i looked for the .pps number and entered the command again, then everything worked perfecly

This solution has been tried before. It does solve the problem at hand, but breaks the ability of Office 2008 to distinguish between template (.dot) and documents (.doc).

See above posts in this thread for the results.

what Tim Fall said is totally false ive downloaded some templates from here http://www.microsoft.com/mac/templates.mspx and it keeps the .dot extension on those files, my solution works just fine.

What you did is a slightly modified version of the first post in this forum. It does solve the problem for .doc file, but may change the way Office handles .dot and other template files. See the results of the first post in this forum.
