Try VLC. I find it more stable than Divx which crashes regularly on me. Yes, Divx has a prettier user interface, but VLC is simply more reliable for everyday use. Quicktime is of course most trouble-free, except when it isn't. :-)

Just want to report this: http://www.applesource.com.au/news/soa/Apple-to-fix-flickering-MacBook-video-flaw/0,2000068500,339288181,00.htm

Hopefully 10.5.3 will be out soon, this bug is really annoying.

I'd like to reiterate that this is not just a leopard problem. It is a Tiger issue as well. I've used both on my santa rosa, and both versions of X gave me serious video flicker in Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Safari, and Firefox. However I don't really see this issue when viewing video files in the standalone quicktime player.
Perhaps its a driver issue with the Nvidia cars, as my friends ATI 1600x based macbook pro has none of these issues. I suppose most people using the Nvidia based macbook pro's are using leopard as I believe they came with the optional upgrade DVD.

Just bought a new mac book pro. A question to all those watching this discussion - Do you have your desktop changing it's picture in the background? I stopped the picture from changing and it appears to have helped. Still need to do some more testing/watching. Sorry in advance if I am just just wishful thinking.

Strangely if you zoom in by using ctrl +scrolling, the flickering stops......Strange! I'm on the phone now with Apple to resolve this....I'll let you all know what the outcome is.

I can confirm that. I've got a brand new black MB (2GB, 2.4GHz, 250GB, 10.5.2) and first noticed the artifact after I loaded the QT MPEG2 codec from Apple. Then I started experimenting and discovered it in other content, too. The latest was on Apple's Tip of the Week site.

I've not seen where foreground/background windows makes one iota of a diff. However, I do see that switching to fullscreen when possible does stop it.

I can confirm this works as well. Zooming in just a little stops the flickering on Firefox 3 RC1.

It is true that switching to full screen stops the flickering. However, when you move the cursor to get to the movie controls, it leads to bizarre color shifts as the control panel appears, then disappears.

Nothing new to add, just want to weigh in as a long-term iBook owner (many generations) surprised/disappointed to discover this issue on a machine purchased last week.

Hopeful that the fix is a patch and coming soon ~

I had contact with Apple Support Tier 2 and 3. I reproduced the issue for them and sent the data to them to help them out. They confirmed the problems and she also confirmed Apple is working to get the problems fixed in the next Software Update, although they can't confirm when this will be released.

I will keep you posted!

I just installed 10.5.3 and it appears the flickering issue has been resolved. I've tested 3 videos that used to flicker (one very badly) and saw no evidence of it anymore.

Thanks, Apple!

ditto, I ran a quickcheck on a couple of random .mpg files and the flickering has disappeared (at least on those two files). Thanks Apple for being so responsive! (Only had to deal with flickering for about three weeks!)

VLC kept me happy in the interim. Props to them too. Except when VLC crashed, which it does frequently....

This problem has been completely fixed on my MacBook following installation of the 10.5.3 update. Thanks to everyone who helped bring attention to this issue.

I have the same problem. I just bought this computer for school next year, and I really hope that every time I try to watch a video my head doesn't start to hurt. I feel like they should be making this more of a priority than it seems they are.

DianeRuth,

From what I can tell they did make it a priority. The problem is fixed now. Unless it still exists and I'm missing it somewhere... (?)

If you're still seeing the problem, can you confirm that you're in fact running 10.5.3?
