Switching to the generic PPD worked for me, too. Yipee! Guess I can't do duplex, though... oh well.

I can confirm that this solution works. Though printing seems seems to be much more slower as a result.

And when I say much slower I really mean much slower. When printing two-sided, 2 pages per sheet it takes between 4 - 5 minutes to print both sides!

Open "System Preferences" -> Choose "Print & Fax" -> Choose the Laserjet 1320 printer -> Press button "Options and Supplies..." -> Select Driver "tab" -> Uncheck the 'page 2' box.
This worked for me. I think this caused printer to default to 2nd paper tray and it thinks it is out of paper.
Hope it works for others also!

I apologize for getting your hopes up. It turned out not to be a fix for me either. Something had it working briefly, I thought it was keeping the print application open, but that does not seem to be doing the trick either.
Hoping for a fix!

We have been having a similar problem where 1320s are paused when a user logs in, they are then prompted to enter the admin password to un-pause the queue.
We have found that using the "Hp Laserjet 4 Plus v2013.111" driver solves this and allows duplex printing.

two questions:
1) how do you find which version of driver you have installed?
2) where can i download that driver version if i need it?
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problems, and have been able to resolve it as of this writing by applying this solution AND within MS Word printing preferences by changing the paper handling tab options from Auto Select to Tray 1. Working without problem for now.

I have never had this problem with my 1320. Currently using driver version 4.3.5.153; printer is connected via USB and has been upgraded to 80 MB of RAM.

I don't have any problem at all regarding the "user intervention". That is to say: I DID have them, but I just chose the "scale to fit page" option in the Driver tab of the printer properties (accessible via System Preferences > Printing & Faxing > HP LaserJet 1320 > Options and Supplies). However, I do have one tiny but annoying problem:
If I use tray 1 (the manual feed tray) to print envelopes, the printer 'pre-feeds' twice, before actually picking the envelope. On its own, this wouldn't have been a problem. What makes it a problem is that all my envelopes are screwed up because the printer starts printing too soon, meaning that the Sender's name is only half visible and the recipient's address is outlined far too much to the left (meaning the Post Office actually has the right to refuse my letters due to misprinted envelopes). I know FOR SURE that the issue isn't with the printing device (i.e. the hardware), as it works like a charm in Windows. So, there has to be a driver and/or settings problem. The only thing is: which setting to change to correct this? I don't want to mess up too much, as the rest of the features are working flawlessly (duplex; fully automatic printing (No User intervention); Banner printing via straight Paper Path; etc.)... So I'd have really liked the envelopes to fit into this line-up as well.
I can't find any appropriate setting to turn off and/or adjust the pre-feeding of envelopes; neither within the GUI nor in any of the CUPS related files nor anywhere in the CUPS web User Interface nor in the terminal... (to those wondering why one types this so explicitly: I've been searching high and low for a solution, even went so far as to try common Unix methods for solving things like this)...
So, if there's anyone willing to help me?
