Restored iPod, can't get january software update
Posted: Jun 23, 2008 8:44 PM

I had to restore my ipod to make it sync with another computer and now I can't get the software update I freakin bought. I have tried everything under iPod Touch on the support pages. I have everything right and it just won't let me get it. This computer I bought the update on has had the OS reinstalled on it since then.

I've got the same problem. My touch came w/ 1.1.3. I up'd to 1.1.4, and purchased the January app update when it came out.

I wanted to wipe my iPod of personal information (going to sell it). I read on here that doing the settings:erase doesn't remove all information (wifi, iTunes purchase). Tried it, verified that post was correct (I could still attach to my encrypted wifi). So I went looking for a total reset instructions.

Found Apple's webpage on how to do it, and then how to install, verify or reinstall the January update: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1376

So I factory-reset it, then followed the instructions to reapply the update. It's not working for me. I can sync music, videos, etc to it. I see the correct software version and serial number when I click on it in iTunes. Just no new apps on it.

I've performed the reset/sync ordeal a few times now. Tried setting it to manual, just to see if that might do the trick. Or toggling to non-manual afterward.

Still no luck :(

Check out this bull crap:

Hi Aaron,

Greetings! My name is Gary and your e-mail has been escalated to me to assist you. I am very sorry to hear that you have lost your January iPod touch upgrade software. The receipt file for this item is stored on the hard drive of your computer. However, since the computer has been restored, the file has been erased. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I am unable to add the software back to your account because it was purchased more than 90 days ago.

The iTunes Store is not responsible for the loss of purchases and encourages customers to back up their hard disks regularly. If an item needs to be replaced, you can restore your purchases from the backup and avoid the need to purchase replacement copies of titles from your collection.

Additionally, please make back up copies of your new purchases on a regular basis.

Well that ***** for you.

It appears I was wrong when I posted originally in this thread, because my situation is different from yours. I've not switched computers. The only thing I did was reset the iPod.

If I were you I would pitch a fit. I've read rumors that when people "lost everything" they've been let to re-download their songs. That they would seemingly not let you redownload the file, or better yet, just email it to you, seems sorts ridiculous, but what do I know.

Hi, I've heard that this upgrade is not longer available because a new release is coming in July 08. Please, I would appreciate you confirm it, do you know when?
Thanks

Solved

Yes, it is no longer available. Nothing has been announced as to why it is no longer available, but an educated guess is it will be available in the 2.0 upgrade ~ 11 July.

"Hi Aaron,

The reason you cannot get the update anymore is because it is no longer for sale. Our engineer's have removed it from the iTunes store and our internal database. When the 2.0 software comes out in July, it will include all of the items that were part of the January update. So you will be able to have those items again. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you and have a great day.

Sincerely,

Gary

Thank you Gary. I will be anxiously awaiting the update on 11 July. Now I can finally go to bed at 1:30 a.m. It would have saved me HOURS of frustration if there was a note posted on either the iTunes or Apple site where it tells you to download the application update!!!

I don't think it is supposed to be posted (or sent out in an email either).

Apple almost never publicizes anything like this.
Usually, if they do something like this, they just do it.
