Hi there. I live in Philadelphia, PA in the USA and having the exact same problem! It is terrible. THe moment I turn off 3G on the iPhone, my service defaults to EDGE and I get 5 bars like I was used to getting on my 2G iPhone. Today walking in downtown Philadelphia, I had No Service for over 1 hour. AT&T said to me that there were no issues at all today in my area. AT&T passes me off to Apple and Apple passes me off to AT&T. Unacceptable. Even when I am connected to the 3G network and browse Yahoo! it takes over 1 minutes for the webpage to come up. But the big issue as well is the signal strength when 3G is turned on....TERRIBLE! So, it is not just you by any means. I never had this issues with my 2G, except way in the beginning, but it was resolved. I am heading to Apple tomorrow for a new phone or return it for good!

I have a 8gb iPhone 3g, Now I dont live in a 3g area but i get very inconsistent bars, going from 4 to 1 all the time.
Also does AT&T have some sort of number to call to update the roaming capabilities? When I had verizon you dialed a number like *223 or soemthing and it would update the roaming capabilities but in some instances it would improve your signal overall.

I actually swapped it out on sunday thinking it was my phone. Its not. Still crummy reception, albeit att showing great 3G service. I'll just keep it on 2G, which will help conserve batt life anyway.

I'm in downtown Chicago with the same problems on a white 16GB: no signal or one bar on 3G, full signal when 3G is disabled. Also the battery is draining insanely fast. I didn't even make it home from work today before it gave out....no talk time a only a few minutes of data. I hope there will be an easy fix soon.

I've been toggling the 3G on and off around Atlanta. The 3G and Edge number of bars are almost always identical. I've been getting speeds from 350 to 450+ kbps. The 3G voice has been much superior to Edge, even with my bluetooth headset.

shure... why should 8GB not having the same effect..... less space for antenna because of memory ?
Seriously, same here in Zuerich with my 8GB. All my other phones have a good reception.... anyway, have to do some speedtest to see if it's only the display or realy bad connection....
cheers

Just got off the phone with a very nice rep.... there is thread after thread on numerous other message boards about this issue.
The rep I just talked to is forwarding the 2 apple disscussions I found to the Apple people who review the problems discussed on this board.
We exchanged emails so he can keep me informed. This appears to be world wide!
I have the 8 gig.

While my battery life on constant 3G is not great, I'm in Downtown Chicago, 16GB black iPhone, and usually full bars signal strength on my 3G.

I also have same problem with my 16gig iphone3g.
I went to Apple and genius guy told me that
its because that phone is holding on to previous cell tower.
I should turn off the phone and on if that happends.
I said, it only happends when I put it on 3G.
He said.. that can't happen as 3G and Edge does not conflict with
reception..
Sigh..I guess no solution here.

I have the same problem in Hong Kong 16 Black iphone with very poor reception. The iphone has problems swtiching from 2G to 3G networks, seems to take a very long time. I have to put my phone in airplane mode, then back to off, before it connects to 3G network. Hong Kong 3G has great reception, so I think the problem is related to the iphone.
Any solutions?

Los Angeles here also. I can stand in one place and see that while I am on a call the 3G reception bounces back and forth between one bar and three.
Thank you AT&T for overstating the capability and reliability of the network. I miss Verizon already...

My wife and I got 16 GB iphone 3G's (white and black, respectively). My wife has dropped several calls on it over the past few days. When I've observed her drop a call, I've told her (based on suggestions on the forums) to turn off 3G. We then observe the reception to go from 1-2 bars on 3G to 4 or 5 bars on Edge. This is in the San Fernando Valley, where AT&T claims 3G coverage just blankets the whole valley. I tend to believe them.
From the other comments I'm seeing around here, there are consistent 3G reception problems around the globe. This would seem to support the hypothesis that this is an iphone problem, not a network problem. I hadn't noticed it much because I'd been holed up for the weekend exploring the iphone's features on my home wi-fi network.

"I don't recall seeing a mention that "3G may reduce reception" in anything Apple produced."
3G is not reducing the reception but it is a different network. It is entirely possible that you can have a full signal on edge and one bar on 3G if the 3G coverage in your area is bad. The two use completely different technology.

I have the same issue in London.
I have two iPhones, a white 16GIG and Black 16GIG, one for me and one for my girlfriend.
They both come form different sources, one from the Apple store, the other O2 by an upgrade.
I have had signal problems with both of them, I had the old iPhone and it worked perfectly at my office with full signal. I have now had 3 calls go straight to answer phone when the phone is sat on the desk doing nothing.
I see the signal bar go from 1 to 4 bars and back for no reason. If I cup the iPhone in my hands to cover the back I can force it down to 1 bar it seems ... very annoying!
I live in hope it is a software issue!
