the two of mine suck too.. This is really disappointing because i waited a year for this one.. and canceled my verizon contract. I am honestly thinking about switching back.. my bars are all over the place. tried all of the above.. and i have dropped more calls in this past week than in 10 years with Verizon.. I am really disappointed. I really hope this is a software thing.. btw i tried both 2.0 versions and neither have done anything for my reception.

Mark me as having the same issue in Houston TX. I'm downtown and sitting at my desk I'll go from 1 bar in 3G, then 3 bars in 3G, then I'll look a few minutes later and I'm on EDGE. I can switch off 3G, turn it back on and get it back, but come on - if I can't get signal in the middle of a major metropolitan city like Houston, there's a problem - especially if you're charging me an extra $10 a month for the priviledge.

I have the same problem, one bar in the living room. If I go to our bedroom, which is directly above the living room, I get 5 bars, go figure.

I too live in Philadelphia and constantly go from 1 to 5 bars in the same location.

My firmware is: 5A345.

I live in Bakersfield CA, and have 2 16GB phones (white and black) and I am experiencing the same problem! I had to turn 3G off to be able to even talk on the phone!

I live in Boulder, Colorado. iPhone 3G, zero to one bars in my house, EDGE only. One block away, I have 5 bars of 3G signal, and it's great. I am traveling out of state at the moment. In Minneapolis (southwest) where AT&T's coverage map is as blue as a Democratic voting district, but ... NO 3G signal at all! I've moved around to other areas of Minneapolis and have yet to pick up a 3G signal ANYWHERE! Why?

People I am meeting with or visiting that have other 3G (even AT&T) phones have no problems. Can't explain why my phone doesn't sense a signal...(sigh)...

I'm experiencing the same problem here in Los Angeles with my 16GB iPhone, as is my friends with the 8gb version. I fluctuate mostly between 1 bar and no connectivity. Hopefully this can be fixed via a software update... AND SOON! Its simply ridiculous that our bill is higher for 3G and we can't even use it.

I'm getting 1 bar tops of 3g at my house and half the time it drops over to EDGE... My friends other 3g phones that are on AT&T are getting 5! This is ridiculous!

I'm getting this problem in South Jersey, near Philadelphia as well. 1-2 bars with slow internet on 3G, full bars right away when I disable 3G.

thought i'd just chime in with my story. i'm located in 94555 (fremont, ca). anyways, short(-ish) and sweet(-ish):

used to have a blackjack ii, was wondering why my call quality was so low (often choppy, rarely dropped), but 3g was pretty speedy. (now i get why the call quality was so bad, cos it wasn't switch down to edge, i guess.)

replaced that with an iphone 3g. 1 bar inside and around the house when it's on 3g with lots of missed calls, every call dropped. i'm forced to turn off 3g to have a usable phone--with edge i get 4-5 bars.

just a couple blocks away, though, mega 3g bars. of course, the at&t map shows blue where i am.

i don't mind that i don't get good 3g reception at home since i use wifi. i just wish i didn't have to keep switching 3g on and off--if only the little bugger weren't so tenacious in trying to hold on to the very last thin thread of 3g signal!

so, for me, it boils down to: please make it switch to edge sooner, say, if i'm down to 1 bar on 3g, go ahead and switch me over to edge. my voice calls will thank you.

jon

I have the same problem. I was traveling in Atlanta (from Minneapolis) and my phone would exhibit this same erratic behavior with the 3G signal, going from 0 to 5 bars, but mostly staying at one bar. Now I'm back in Minneapolis, and the signal was flakey at the airport, but in downtown Minneapolis it seems to be working fine, mostly 4-5 bars. What part of Minneapolis have you been having problems? I'm still not sure if there's a problem with the phone, or if there's a problem with ATT's 3G network. The fact that it was totally unreliable in Atlanta, but working fine in Minneapolis (same phone) suggests that its ATT, but the fact that other ATT 3G phones are working fine on the same 3G network while the iPhone's are flaking out, suggests it's the phone. How frustrating. And, neither ATT nor Apple can or will say what is the problem, if they know.

Has anyone here tried a Restore through iTunes to reset your iPhone to the factory defaults. You may or may not be aware that Apple did a small update shortly before or upon the iPhone 3G release. The new firmware is 5A347. The old firmware is 5A345.

I have no idea if there is anything in the firmware update that will resolve this issue, but it fix the yellow screen and some other speed concerns.

Same issue here. Low 3g coverage in downtown San Francisco, I went to the apple store, I told them and they knew about the issues, we compared 3 different 3g iphones side by side, all of them with poor 3g connectivity. They say to wait 5 or 6 days, they don't have a solution yet.

As someone mentioned earlier...the only way to resolve this is to return your iPhone and speak with your wallet. AT&T and Apple will not get the message until they see people won't put up with this crap.
