iphone 3G sync takes 15 hours

Why does my syncing process all of a sudden take 15 hours? This started a few months ago with my original iphone, and did not improve with iphone reset or re-installing itunes on my computer. The problem now persists with my new iphone 3G. The longest part seems to be syncing of contacts and calendars. Any thoughts out there on how to fix this?

In Applications > iSync > iSync menu > Preferences, click Reset Sync History (you may need to wait a few seconds for the button to become active).

That is rather a long time
I suggest this:
Backup your contacts and calendar (use the file export function in Address Book, and the Backup function in iCal).
Then delete them all
Then open iSync, go to Preferences, and reset sync history.
Now connect the phone, and in iTunes, do a Restore.
Once that's done, try a sync. Select the option in iTunes (on the Info tab) to replace all iPhone data with data from the Mac; if the time is more reasonable (a few minutes), reimport your backups into iCal and Address Book and sync them over to the phone. Again, replace data on phone
Hope that helps

to stop the long sync you can desactivate the backup in itunes using the terminal.
This command will change a hidden setting in the iTunes preferences that will force it to skip the backup process.
1. - Quit iTunes.
2. - Open Terminal.app
3. - Copy and paste this in, then hit return:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true
4. - Open iTunes
5. - Plug in your iPhone (2.0 or 3G) and sync.
It will take a few seconds, assuming you don't have a ton of music or podcasts.
Changing the 'true' in step 3 to 'false' will re-enable the backup feature.

Hey jluchs1,
This could be a USB connection issue. Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac.
This article has tips for troubleshooting USB issues:
