Just finished a lengthy chat session with support on this...
It is a MobileMe issue, having tried many things I have now lost bookmarks, and cal info also. Suggestion is to revert to iTunes sync until they can fix this.
No ETA was given. Not happy about this at all.

Well, I've just tried to turn off Mobile Me, both in System Prefs and on the iPhone itself. In both places, it says MM is turned off, but in iTunes, it still says that MM is **still** pushing my Contacts and Calendars. Somehow, my main group list of Contacts has shown up, but the sub groups I have did not. At this point, I am just going to not sync for a few days and watch the forum to see when this clears up. Unless someone has a better idea. I am completely game to trying an idea from all of you who I know are much brighter than I about these issues!!

I trust that Apple will fix the issue as soon as they can.
This does put a damper on Monday Morning.

I just tried turning Push off on the iPhone, then restarted it and turned Push back on. The progress wheel is still turning on my Contacts page but nothing has shown up yet. Both the Contacts list and Calendar are blank now, but still online at MobileMe. Have to go home to my other Mac to try manually syncing the info again, see if that works.

Me too. All contacts are gone. The favorites list became a list of numbers only. Tried all of the suggestions in the Apple Support Document. Nothing fixed it. It will not even let me enter a contact MANUALLY into the phone. This is terrible. What good is this phone if you can't have a Contacts list. I am now trying to restore the phone from iTunes. What a disaster this is. I had been noticing that some of the changes I made on my phone never made it to me.com or vice versa. Now this. Ridiculous.

Hmmmm, why did I have a worry that this would one day happen. All my contacts, whiped out! Always great trying to decode my text message and figure out who's calling me! Phone numbers have even gotten flipped around and when I add a contact, it doesn't stick on my phone b/c the syncing gets messed up.
I think I am going to pass on the mobile me when all is said and done. I never expected this from Apple.
Home/Power button reset: Nothing
Deleted/reset @me.com acct: Nothing
Flipped through all sync enablers: Nothing
Feelings of warm fuzzies in my heart for my iPhone at the moment: Nothing
COME ON, APPLE! Give us SOMETHING.

I lost all of my contacts at around 1 pm (eastern time). I called Apple. Talked to a specialty person. Spent one hour, and she tried to get me to sync my phone with Itunes, setting up another account, importing ICal, VCards from Address Book. Couldn't do anything. She turned her phone off at the same time, and the same exact thing happened to her. She finally said she had to meet with some engineers, etc., to figure this out. She was very baffled - promised to call me back when she found some answers. It is clear it's MobileMe she said. The wheel keeps spinning in Contacts.

I posted the "fix" else where but I believe I was one of the first to report this to apple. If you upgraded from 1.x, then there is a good chance the files were corrupted. You need to do a complete restore but when prompted half way thru the process, choose "New Phone" option.
Note that this will cause you to loose all your customization but more importantly, your notes. You should email them before hand so at least you have a copy of them.
Good luck!

Wow. I don't own an iPhone yet, but wanted to chime in as I've been following these posts very closely. Of all the issues I've read about, the "missing contacts" is the one that concerns me the most, and is making me question getting an iPhone. I polled some of my co-workers who have new 3G iPhones, and it seems the only ones who are not having problems don't have MobileMe subscriptions. The ones that do however,(3 of them) are in the same boat as all of you. Given I use an iMac at home coupled with .mac (now MobileMe), it seems that I'd probably be one of the unlucky ones as well.
Personally, I think MobileMe is the culprit here. It is/was obviously a work in progress and shouldn't have been launched until most of the bugs were worked out. As it stands, it seems like everyone who uses MobileMe has been relegated to being unwitting beta testers. Perhaps a stop-gap emergency solution is in order, that being taking MobileMe down until the missing contacts issue can be rectified. Not being able to rely on one of the primary functions of your mobile phone is a HUGE problem.
I can't fault Apple for trying to orchestrate a launch of massive proportions, but they need to step up to the plate, especially with this issue. Good luck to all you guys; I think I'm going to wait before taking the plunge, and see how this all plays out.
