IPHONE burning face
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 5:55 AM

I drove 12 miles to the AT&T store to have my phone looked at because it’s getting so hot when I talk on it - its burning my face, my contacts are disappearing and it won’t hold a charge (I have the first Iphone and it’s still under warrantee).

I was told that they couldn't help me that I had to go to the apple store. So I got back in my car and drove 18 miles to the nearest apple store.

When I got there I approached a sales person, told her my problem and she said that I had to make an appointment. She walked me over to a computer and then said, oh I'm sorry - we can’t see you today, you will have to come tomorrow and the first and only appointment is at 2:30 and that maybe they had something available the following day -

I told her I can’t take off work to drive 28 miles to have my phone looked at... and wasn't she concerned that my Iphone was burning the side of my head?
She said she couldn't help me that I had to make an appointment.

I am so totally appalled. I am a HUGE fan of apple products and own a bunch of them. However, this experience has made me rethink my support of apple.com
They had no problem taking my 400 bucks for the phone -

So let me ask, has anyone else experienced their phone burning their head? I can only hope it’s not causing brain cancer (watch the news if that sounds foreign to you).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your iPhone was "burning" your face and head this day as in a 2nd degree burn or worse, why didn't you drive to a hospital emergency room instead?

at&t does not handle any iPhone repairs or exchanges under warranty, which has been known for over a year. To have an Apple Store genius look at any Apple product, making an appointment is required unless you prefer showing up and waiting for a possible opening.

Or you can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466 to handle everything over the phone.

Listen... you can be smart *** about my experience or you can just help send me in the right direction...

Not everyone is in the "know" as it seems you are with your thousands of posts.

No, you are correct, i don’t have 2nd degree burns... but its HOT very HOT against my face... and I went to the store to try and have it fixed.

There was a huge line of people waiting to get the new iphone - I just wanted to get mine fixed so that I could use it.. ya know?

I see things work now.. if you are buying a new phone… come on in we want your money.. if you need one fixed.. oh I’m sorry you’ll have to come back…

If you don't have even a first degree burn or worse, using the term "burning" to describe this is not appropriate and is being way too dramatic for the problem at hand.

I don't purchase any electronics - phone or otherwise without asking and knowing where I go if there is a warranty issue. Had you asked this question when your iPhone was purchased, it would have saved you some driving and maybe there would be less dramatics now, but probably not.

Allan,

When I am on the phone with someone and my phone gets hot, yes, it does burn.. how can you pretend to know what I am feeling? You must be something pretty special if you have those powers.

Im sure its not really burning, is it? If it is burning i.e making you blister or eating through your flesh im sure the Apple store would not have turned you away as they surely would want to investigate the product ASAP.

If it were me and my phone was "Burning my face" and causing me injury i would not have left the shop untill i spoke to a manager. Now if it was just getting hot and had a problem i would have settled to make an appointment and return at a later date

I was just on the phone with Apple for 9 minutes with a girl by the name of tiffany - she said she was putting me on with a apple technical specialist, I held for another 2 minutes and they must have mistakenly hung up on me. I will try calling back again.

I'm looking for help guys not attitude -

from dictionary.com -

burn: from dictionary.com
–verb (used without object)
to give off heat or be hot: The pavement burned in the noon sun.
to give off light or to glow brightly: The lights in the house burned all night.

(my face doesn't have to be melting for something to burn)

If you just want help and no "attitude" along with it, then I suggest that you dispense with all the dramatics. If your face and head was burned by the definition of skin burning, you would have driven to an emergency room or sought first aid. I'm not questioning that your iPhone is getting very warm or hot or the iPhone itself is burning by definition of burn in this context, but actual burning of skin is different.

Please note that you said, "burning my face." This implies that the device is actually causing a burn on your face. The first definition would only apply to the device itself. For example, "the iPhone is burning hot."

Since you're looking for my help, not my attitude, I will give you the following advice. If it hurts you physically to use the iPhone, then stop using it until you can get something sorted out.

I'm sorry that your iphone is hot/burning (whatever) against your face.

It is unfortunate that you did not know how repairs on the iphone are handled. It does make sense that whoever you bought it from would service it, but this is not the case with the iphone.

Allan gave you the correct information in regards to obtaining service on your iphone. In my experience on this forum he is among the( if not the absolute) most helpful person on this forum.

I have read post from others complaining of excessive heat from the iphone. Some have said that it corrects itself, others have scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar and had their iphone replaced.

WOW Paige,
Let me start by saying your post and question were appropriate. As pointed out in your dictionary definition your use of the word burn DOESN'T denote some 2nd or 3rd degree burn. Burn is a descriptor,as is 3rd degree burn. You didn't imply you were getting a burn injury, just that the phone was getting HOT!! I am a long time MAC user and an East Texan. In East Texas we pride ourselves in being friendly and helpful,ESPECIALLY to women (or anyone for that matter)who don't have an extensive knowledge base.
This is for Alan and the other guy who I feel didn't answer in the spirit of rule #2 in the signed agreement.
2. Be polite. Everyone should feel comfortable reading Submissions and participating in discussions. Apple will not tolerate flames or other inappropriate statements, material, or links. Most often, a "flame" is simply a statement that is taunting and thus arbitrarily inflammatory.

I also feel your remarks about the seeming lack of caring were valid. Most people in business will agree that customer service is very important to success.I feel your situation could have, and should have been handled differently.I can tell you that I have had a lot better experience in the apple stores.
Anyway,I am puzzled by the condescending (sorry I gotta call them what they are) nature of the "help"you were offered.
Oh yeah. To address your situation
Sometimes the heat you feel is worse if , say the phone is in the sun,or laying on carpet, or being charged. There is sometimes a lot of heat involved in computers and electronic devices.

ALAN and MULE be nice. This is a lady and a newby.

Well I gotta take exception to your post to the poor woman and the burning I-phone. I don't know why everyone needed to scrutinize her use of English instead of just trying to be helpful SOOO.....
here is a great example of the falicy of your statement. When someone gets a sunburn,it is from being in the sun too long and causing a burn injury. All of us have had a sunburn. Now think about it. (be honest with yourself if with no one else!)You have felt the sun burning your face and if you get out of the sun soon enough you do not get a burn, but most would say when they got in the house"that sun was burning my face"

Yes this thread seems to have gone on a completely unnecessary tangent.

Anyway, I have the original iPhone (I don't know if you were talking about that or a 3G, I will assume 3G). I've felt it get warm before (especially after the 2.0 upgrade) but I've never felt it get hot to the point that it is uncomfortable to touch under any circumstance.

I think you should definitely have it looked at as it sounds like yours is heating up more than the typical iPhone would. While I understand your frustration with the appointment situation, the upside with it is that when you do find a timeslot that fits your schedule you should be treated well (from everything I've seen and read).

Looking at this from Apple's perspective. During this launch period they have had hoards of people trying to get service for one reason or the other, they can either have 20 people standing in a tech support line or fighting to get the tech's attention first, or try to find some other way of organizing things. For better or worse, this is how they've chosen to do it.

amin & clangley50 -

thank you for not being jerks and thanks for listening to me.

I actually made an appointment and took my phone in yesterday. The staff were slammed... there were so many people there.

However - a guy at the genius bar ran diagnostics on my phone and in less that 2 minutes was back and said "your phone is having problems, we are giving you a brand new one" mentioning also there was a problem with the battery which does make the phone very hot.

ps - when I was describing the problem and used the word "burn" like the sidewalk is hot and burns your feet in the summer time, the dude totally understood what I was talking about...you guys that got mad at me.. you need to get out more.. I think your frustrated.
