My iphone is stuck at the apple logo and will not come out of it. ive tried resetting it by holding the power and home buttons but it just restarts and goes back to the logo. I've tried holding down the power button, nothing happens. Please what should i do. I've hooked it into itunes and nothing happens too.

Try Putting The iP in Recovery mode:
-->Press and hold the Home button while reconnecting USB cable. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message.

it worked.
it took a bit of hacking. when apple had finished the restore I had to synch and it took an hour or so to realign the icons. a bit ( not much) data was lost.

I am on my third DFU recovery this month alone. This takes me on average about 5 hours each time to complete and no two recoveries are the same. Today's recovery has gone as follows:
Plug in USB iPhone and restart in DFU mode.
Opened iTunes and it asked me to download iPhone 2.0.2 update (I've been on holiday and this is the first chance to update).
Watched this 241MB download freeze and tried to download it a number of times which failed at 71MB, 24MB, 94MB and 108MB.
Decide to try restarting (DFU) iPhone whilst Download had frozen. This actually worked, the download continued but as the iPhone froze again it needed a repeated of the DFU restart.
I did this every 2-5MBs worth of download from 108MBs until 241MB file had completed.
Completed the upgrade and restore of latest backup.
Total time 2pm -8pm. 6 Hours.
I should add that iTunes insisted I installed the 2.0.2 upgrade and there was no option to go straight to restore from backup.

Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Your suggestion doesn't work at all. I have the exact same problem, but when I press and hold th ehome button while reconnecting the USB cable I never see "connect to iTunes" on my screen. Nothing changes. With my iPhone frozen at the apple logo and plugged in however, iTunes doesn't respond at all, but when I unplug the iPhone iTunes starts responding immediately. HELP!

I had this same problem once when I tried to upgrade to 2.0.2. Not sure how I got out of it but it eventually worked for me. Try creating a new profile, i know that has worked for some people!

You are confusing two different recovery processes, I think.
Restore Mode
1) Unplug iPhone from the computer (by taking the sync cable out of the computer but keeping the cable connected to your phone) and turn it off. If stuck at reboot screen hold home & power together until it is shut down.
2) Hold down the home button and plug your iPhone into your computer.
3) iTunes will see an iPhone in recovery mode and allow you to restore.
DFU Mode
1) Turn off your iPhone but remain attached to your computer.
2) Press and hold home and power buttons together for 10 seconds.
3) On 10, release power but continue holding home for 10 seconds more.
4) iTunes will see the iPhone in recovery mode and let you restore.
The Difference
In restore mode you will see the iTunes icon and usb plug icon on your iPhone screen. In DFU, your screen will be blank.
DFU mode allows you to restore you device without loading the OS. You must use DFU if you want to downgrade firmware. I prefer it because it is a more "complete" restore of the firmware.

I have just tried Restore and DFU as described in your post and in both methods, the iPhone shows the usb cable/iTunes logo and iTunes Says it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Personnally I'm at a loss and off to our apple store today to vent.
FYI This is where I was directed to find out about DFU mode:
http://limitededitioniphone.com/how-to-put-the-iphone-into-dfu-mode/
and sorry if I have caused confusion by mentioning DFU mode.

dfu mode is not always easy to get into(takes me a few tries). If done properly the iPhone's screen will be black but iTunes will say it has detected it in restore mode...but I have yet to get any iPhone to restore from a backup and get stuck having to set up as a new phone and resync all my media/apps losing all my data(ie memo, Texas Holdem winnings, prefs, etc.)
Plus the backups are like 300mb but take hours with certain apps on the phone. I've had about enough of all this nonsense...

what gives with 2.0.2? Why is apple advertising this firmware when its the worst release to date?
This the 5th time I have recovered my phone because the phone freezes at the apple logo everytime I reboot the phone. The reason I reboot because of the laggy sms which slows down the phone. REALLY ANNOYING!! I'm gonna swap my phone for a new one. I've downgraded back to 2.0.1 and now I have the same problem. Before i updated 2.0.2 the phone was fine. But now the phone is unusable, unstable. If I reboot the phone freezes and the only way for it to respond is via restore. *****!!!

so, yet again, APPLE, i was syncing apps that i purchased from the AppStore and my iPhone crashed and was stuck at the boot screen. this time, at least, it eventually kicked itself back to the home screen. it took 5 minutes though. i have never seen it actually get un-stuck from the boot screen before, but, i've also never waited that long. i just kept it plugged in, with my fists clenched as i contemplated what to do...
i seriously was about to lose it, i have wasted so much of my life restoring this phone. and i hate saying this, i am such a huge Apple promoter and spend a lot of money in my local Apple Store. i mean, i really really love Apple. everyone i know calls me the iWhore and wonders why i don't just work for Apple. i love my Mac like a family member, but my experience with the iPhone OS 2.x.x and, to a lesser extent, the actual iPhone 3G, has really left a bad taste in my mouth. my dad has always been a big windows guy and after years of trying to get him to switch, he took the first step and got a 3G. i'm afraid he won't even give Macs a chance if he has even half of the bugs, crashes, and quality control issues i've had.
okay, /rant
anyway, i meant to say, if your iphone does crash when its syncing to itunes like mine has at least 8 times in the past week, try just leaving it plugged in and maybe, just maybe, it will come back to life.
if not, DFU that mother. or take it back to your local Apple store and put a genius to work.

Ah yes, the troublesome child.
I am going to tempt fate here, I know. Haven't had any real bother with the latest upgrade, other than the fact I didn't notice any difference.
Mine is an only child but still equally as troublesome.
