call failed

this is just a note to say I spent most of today struggling with the phone service on my 16gig iPhone 3g. Incoming or outgoing, the call would hold for a second or two and then drop and I get a 'call failed' message on my phone.
I googled 'iphone call failed' and read on at least one non apple mesage board that users with same issue were handed new phones by their apple store but the AT&T store where I bought the thing was a lot closer so I went there first. The guy at AT&T verified my description of the issue and then swapped out my SIM card an so far, since then, so good. Five minutes, done.
So all that to say, if you're having the call failed issue with your iPhone 3g, you may just need a new sim, not a whole new phone.

After the update I was not able to make or receive calls when at my home. The phone would immediately give me the "call failed" message, and people trying to reach me would get a message that said that "the call could not be completed at this time" or something to that effect. The phone would work if I ventured out so that it would find another cel site, but would drop any current call once I got close to my house. Calls to AT&T did not fix the problem. I was about to go to the Apple store to get a replacement when I thought to turn off 3G in preferences. That did the trick, I can now send and receive calls, but 3G must be turned off. If you're having trouble, its worth a shot. I would think that it is a temporary issue.

I don't understand how changing the data network can help with call reliability. 3G and Edge are just for data. You're going to get the same cell phone reception with 3G on as with it off. Right? Anyone have an explanation for why changing the data network would improve voice reception?

Actually 3G started out as a Wide-Area Cellular telephone standard and later evolved to support data delivery alongside voice.
Edge (or 2.75G) is also a mobile telephony standard with support for a data transport layer.
So, yes, switching between Edge and 3G can affect both you data and voice quality/speed/reception.
