I use Windows. I just uninstalled 7.7.1 from Control Panel--> Add/Remove Programs. Then installed 7.7.0. My phone has been working fine since I did this for 4 or 5 days now. I also updated to 2.0.2 and didn't have any issues.

These are the steps I took...

My situation was that none of my apps worked and the iPhone said that I had no content on the iPod (which wasn't true as I had 6GB of music and a bunch of videos.)

So here is what I did (I followed someones advice from a post earlier in this thread or maybe it was on the Apple forums)...

1. Synced the phone to iTunes 7.7.1 (although I probably could have uninstalled 7.7.1 at this point and installed 7.7.0)
2. Then selected the phone in the devices list on iTunes
3. Selected the Applications Tab and unchecked "Sync Applications"
4. Pressed the Sync button at the bottom of the page which then removed all apps from the phone.
5. After that was done a few apps were still left on the phone so I deleted them on the phone itself.
6. I disconnected the phone from the USB cable and powered it off then powered it back on.
7. When the phone started up I then was able to get to my music and videos on the iPod part on the phone.
8. I then uninstalled iTunes 7.7.1 from my PC and rebooted the PC.
9. When the PC booted up I installed 7.7.0 of iTunes which you can get here...

http://rapidshare.com/files/133199773/iTunesSetup.exe

All my settings and library were still there iTunes when 7.7.0 loaded by the way.

10. I then connected the phone and selected the phone in the devices list on iTunes.
11. Selected the Applications Tab and checked "Sync Applications"
12. Pressed the Sync button at the bottom of the page which then added back all the from the phone.

After that all my apps work as does the iPod (and they still do).

Apple is aware of the bug and a fix is coming in September, according to an email from Steve Jobs. See:

I had the same problem.. all my applications crashed
and it deleted all my music and movies.

I went to the genius bar yesterday and they told me to restore the phone to the originally settings.. and then download iphone software 2.0.2
then resync the phone... but start with the music and movies first.
I did that then i resynced only some of the applications. It seems to have worked.. my phone is no longer crashing. TRY IT. It works.. And dont be too overzealous with the applications.. just download ones that have good ratings and read the comments from ppl. I think it was that Zen puzzle game that did it too.. because once that was gone.. it works fine.

Just like almost everyone else on this forum, I have the same problem. I have tried all the suggestions to no avail. I wish there was some way to know that Apple is taking this seriously and that there will be a fix some time very soon. Steve Jobs' promise of a solution in September seems very far off! If anyone comes up with a foolproof fix, I would love to know about it!

This is the first time for over 20 years that I am unhappy with Apple. I understand that this was a huge undertaking (too fast), but the competition is catching up. So if anybody (Apple) can please figure out how to get the Apps to work and our music back on our phones, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

If anyone in this forum has both a Mac and a PC they may want to try plugging thier iPhone/iPod Touch into a PC if they are using a Mac to sync and vice versa.

This actually formats the iPhone/iPod Touch into HFS+ or FAT32 depending on what you are plugging it into. If you are having some sort of permissions issue you could be assured that this will format your file system and not just delete the contents.

A simple restore may not necessarily format the file system. Just a thought.

Same problem... Apple Apps work, downloaded (free or paid) not working. This just happened out of nowhere. I downloaded 2.02 and still downloaded apps not working. Per the suggestion below, I downloaded 1 free app, rebooted the iPhone and now all seem to work. What's up with that?

Well, my iPhone started having this problem again last Wednesday. I left for Vegas the next morning and managed to get through the convention I was at and the extra couple days' vacation without any apps or iPod content - but I was not happy about it! During my free time I did try some variations on the "remove/install/reboot"-type fixes, including attempting to remove the majority of my applications, with no luck. In fact, most of the time, the applications I attempted to remove directly from the phone (I didn't sync with the computer the whole time) showed back up when I rebooted it.

Tonight, I installed the 2.0.2 update, and my applications were still not working immediately after. However, I re-synced my phone with iTunes, and now they are!

I'm sorry to say I did not follow a strictly scientific process, because I really didn't expect it to start working again. I had also unchecked a couple more apps in the synchronization settings in iTunes before syncing, so those were removed, and I downloaded (in iTunes) a non-free application that I had previously removed from my phone (and was never in iTunes before).

Anyway, I am going to try to get all my applications back on there, and will report back with what happens. Good luck to you all!

P.S. When my problem started happening again on Wednesday, it was immediately after Loopt crashed while acquiring my location, and I am pretty sure that all of my previous instances of this problem followed application crashes, at least one of them identical. This leads me to wonder if corrupted application data is actually the problem, rather than permissions as has been previously suggested. If anyone else has observed similar behavior, I would be very interested in hearing about it.

P.P.S.: When I said "at least one of them identical", I meant after Loopt crashed while acquiring my location. I am pretty sure that it was the very first time I started having problems, too...

my apps were all working fine until I installed 2.0.2 last night

I didn't realise the weren't working until I did a quick search for what exactly was in the release, and found some people complaining that apps were no longer working.

I've already done a re-synch with iTunes, and none of the apps work.

I've also checked with the app browser on the phone, and "no new updates" are available.

Come on apple, at least make your software updates available to the developers before it's released, at least then apps might work after it's updated. Especially useful for those business users out there, for whom the apps MIGHT be business critical.

like i said before. Restore your phone to factory settings and download the 2.0.2
then resync music and video first.. then applications
and try to eliminate the applications that you downloaded recently that may have caused the problem.

hey there.

i'm jaime and i started a thread a while back in a different section:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1644897&tstart=15#7910489

in that thread, we've done some pretty robust troubleshooting and trial and error. we have determined pretty clearly that for the problem at hand - the apps crash no media problem - any other fix simply won't stick for the long haul. the only reliable way to fix the problem is a downgrade to itunes 7.7 (at least demonstrated on a OS X- windows i'm not so sure).

i can post a quick summation next. but i would encourage you to look at that thread to see if you notice anything we haven't, and vise versa.

The applications I downloaded? you mean the legitimate applications that were bought and paid for via the App Store?

I'll try the factory reset, but even if that works, it's a rather shoddy state of affairs.

His suggestion was probably meant as a temporary solution. There is supposed to be an update in September addressing this issue. And yes, it's pretty screwed up.

I've had this happen 9-10 times in a month.

after slogging thru all 4 pages of this thread, i'm not sure anyone's experiencing something similar to me...and hopefully this addl info is helpful in building a fix.

i have 2 iphone 3gs purchased this past sat. they came with 2.0.1 and have NOT updated to 2.0.2. itunes is 7.7.1. basically the first iphone i setup in itunes has had ZERO problems with 3rd party apps (only downloaded via wifi directly to the phone). the other iphone (setup 2nd on the same itunes account as the first -- like any other setup where someone's using multiple ipods with one music or photo library) cannot use ANY 3rd party apps...and have only downloaded 5 or so in the few days we've had it.

based on everything i've read, the argument that this is an itunes related issue makes sense to me.

nonetheless, having not seen anyone reference owning multiple phones that source from a single itunes account having totally different experiences, wanted to toss it out to the group for discussion...
