Macbook pro keeps crashing whenever time capsule backup begins
Posted: Aug 19, 2008 11:38 AM

Hi Ive been using time capsule for a while now and for the last 3 days my mac has crashed almost 8 times whenever a backup process began. Initially I couldnt figure out why the system kept crashing till I finally noticed. The error shown is:

I have the same problem. I've gotten the time capsule about 2 weeks ago and started to setup the regular backups. I remembered that there were a few updates for my MacBook and also Time Machine or Airport Extreme. (Don't remember the details). However, about 2 days ago, whenever I execute the backup or enter Time Machine program, the screen changes into a gray one with the message saying that I need to reboot using power button and everything freezes. After I reboot, I have very similar error messages that Doseman bring here.
Any idea what I can do to prevent the crashes? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I've also just recently started having this kernel panic problem. I can't think of any changes I've made to my system that would cause this to suddenly start.

I will call Apple tomorrow to see what they recommend, and will share results here.

My console log:

Finally I have read many postings regarding the firmware upgrade of Airport Utility and Time Capsule. I decided to try the downgrade of both of them (i.e. Airport Utility 5.3.1 and Time Capsule 7.3.1). Those are the previous version before the current ones. Then, I erased all the files of previous backups.
Then, I executed the regular backup of Time Machine and there is no crash nor hang up. I guess those current firmware upgrades are not that stable. I decided to rather wait for the next stable ones. Hope this helps.

Aloha--

Since you took three actions at the same time (downgrading the TC firmware and Airport Utility, and formatting your TC drive), we don't know which of those actions solved the problem. I would bet it was formatting the drive and starting over.

After speaking with an Apple wireless product specialist yesterday, I was told to open Disk Utility and drag my backup sparse bundle into it. I then conducted a disk repair on the sparse bundle. This took all day, and looked like it was hanging, but eventually it finished and solved my problem completely. Obviously, you'll need to turn off Time Machine for the duration of this process.

Let me know if this does not solve your problem as well, fellas.

Sound like it may be having trouble within the sparsebundle backup "file."

If you mount the backup: Click on TC name in Shared in Finder, double click on TC Disk name in Finder Window, double click on sparsebundle name.

It will soon show up in a small window saying "verifying." See what it reports. If it succeeds in mounting the backup - it should appear as "Backup of yourMachinename/"

You can then work on it with Disk Utility.

It is also possible that it foundering on some issue in the backup source, so checking the source volume out with Disk Utility may reveal the problem.

I tried this but got the following message:

Verify and Repair volume “Backup of Eldose Babu’s MacBook Pro”
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Detected a case-sensitive catalog.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed.

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

I ran repair disk directly. Or did i do something wrong? I opened disk utility, clicked on the sparse bundle, ran repair disk and got the above message.

Im thinking if I should erase my time capsule now.. any advice?

Doseman--

Was your backup sparse image already mounted when you ran the disk repair? If so, I'd recommend unmounting it by dragging the image from your desktop to the trash (which becomes an eject icon).

Then try the steps I outlined above: in Finder, drag the sparse image from its location on your Time Capsule into the Disk Utility window. Then run disk repair.

If this still does not fix it, the image is likely corrupt. You may indeed have to format your TC drive and perform a new initial backup. Before you do this, though, call Apple if you're still covered under warranty or Apple Care. They may have some other suggestions.

So I've already offered a solution above, but let me speculate as to how this happened in the first place:

Time Machine has no problem pausing a backup to Time Capsule when you close your computer, and it resumes the backup once you wake your system. However, if Time Machine is in the middle of a backup, and you close your computer and take it to a location outside the wireless range of your Time Capsule, Time Machine will be unable to finish the backup, and probably has left incomplete files or directories on Time Capsule.

If you know you'll be leaving the range of your Time Capsule, either wait for Time Machine to finish, or manually stop the backup. I bet this will prevent the problem from occurring again in the future.

My TC was working perfectly since I bought it 5 months ago but yesterday I had the advertisement "backup failed" and, now, I have a kernel panic a few seconds after the beginning of a backup (automatic or manual).
-----I tried your recipe via AirPort but 1 hour after the beginning of "verify the volumes" I had the advertisement "the volume may be corrupt and can damage your system"
------I tried to connect the TC via Ethernet but no icon appears on the desktop.
The Ethernet wire and the Ethernet socket of the mac are ok.
What can I do ?

Jean--

Check my recommendation above. You should unmount (eject) the backup volume from your desktop and then follow my instructions to drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility. From there, perform a repair disk operation. This will either fix the errors and solve your problem, or be unable to work with the disk image.

Let me know what happens.

Yup I think you may be right. I did several times take the laptop outside the wireless range and never bothered to check the status of time machine backup. I will check in the future. I however, think this could still be a loophole that needs to be fixed or looked into by Apple.

I ended up erasing the time capsule and today restarted the backup process. Did not downgrade the update. Backup process is ongoing and hopefully should work fine.

Anybody having a similar problem outlined kindly follow "VictoryCig"'s solution outlined. I ended up formatting time capsule however and things are fine now.

Hello
1) I tried your recipe Result = 0
2) I spent 2 hours of phone with AppleCare and made all sorts of tricks Result : no Kernel panic but unable to connect the TC, do Backup or repair the drive. Finally it was possible to erase the TC drive but each attempt of backup failed.
3) I re-instaled the system : the same result.
4) Finally I trashed the TC preference plist ant it seems to works but slowly because my Ethernet connection don't works why ?
